IPv4 addresses have run dry

Shut down everything! I think we will see a lot of dual stack networks now, running both IPV4 and V6.
 
Firewalls aren't IPv6 ready yet.

Not going to lose sleep over that - can easily upgrade them to IPv6-capable firewall - when (and if) our ISP also upgrades their end...

So this all is a classic chicken-egg syndrome.
 
Can someone please update me as to how and if this effects or will effect a noob user like me? sitting at home behind a normal ADSL router on my pretty normal IPV4 wireless and wired network?

I have been using ipv4 and v6 for a while... and many sites are v6 ready, like youtube, google, etc
 
Last week a ISP in Zambia gave me a subnet i was only requesting 4 so there is still plenty subnets available in Africa

Phew! Now that's a pretty broad statement.

Most modern firewalls (and I'm talking a few years back) already support IPv6. That includes Cisco, Checkpoint, Juniper, almost all Linux distro's, the BSDs and even Win7 supports it (along with the built-in Windows7 firewall). The cheapie ZyXEL DSL router I bought for my parents in April 2010 also has full IPv6 support.

But I get what you're saying, there are a lot of really old firewalls and border routers still in operation that do not support it.

Good to know! How dumbed down is its firewall interface? Does it have a default ruleset?

It allows you to block all inbound traffic and has space for 10 rules to internal addresses. The notable exception is that it does not have any NAT functionality for the IPv6 side (which is what IPv6 is all about ... all your IPs are globally routable IPs).
