Is Apple worse for open source software than Microsoft?

You havent posted any evidence to the contrary icryrus. Just a lot of "I dont agree" but no substance.

Feel free to backup your claims, I'm not going to research it for you. Suffice it to say that in no market does Apple have a monopoly despite what you may think.

[joke]It has a monopoly over the distribution of apple apps ;) [/joke]

Wow, so mathematicians must solve the worlds hardest problems and get payed fckall (really, academics earn very little) while other fckrs use that math to make millions ?? Do you not see a problem here? Is that not disgusting?? Bring on the patents, make the mathematician rich, make the guys that come up with the IDEAS RICH!!

No man is an island. The work is based on prior art and through collaboration with other scientists. If every scientists started working on his own in secrecy progress will be much slower seeing there will be no sharing of ideas and you would not be able to use it in the educational sector either, talk about stagnation of the human race. I reckon your logic is flawed ;)

More tripe. Like I said, show me someone who developed something without standing on the shoulders of giants and I will show you a liar. People come up with good ideas that drive humanity forward but they utilize thousands of years of previous knowledge to do so. To then claim that they have sole ownership of the idea is arrogance in the extreme.

I am not saying they didn't use other peoples work, doesnt mean what they have done isn't special and doens't deserve credit. Let them lock it down for 10 years or so then make it public knowledge... let them make the money, and if u want to use it pay them for it... simple. If they don't wanna sell it to you, you should have thought of it first! icyrus, one day you might just develop something beyond awesome... if you do would you just make it free public knowledge?

I agree knowledge is derivative, doesn't mean someone else could have solved Poincare'. Still took something exceptional from a guy who worked his a$$ off and if wants to make money he should be allowed to. Patents often give people incentive to come up with something new and amazing that they can own!
Well, you can't prove that no one else could have solved whatever you're referring to, and it's irrational to assume that. As for incentives, it's been proven time and time again that problem solving human creativity is not aided by monetary incentives (the opposite, in fact). As for ownership, it is but another contrived illusion to support the monetary system. In reality nothing is owned, least of which an idea.

I am not saying they didn't use other peoples work, doesnt mean what they have done isn't special and doens't deserve credit.
What about the countless hours of research that goes into disproving theories, such as the classic elemental theory, Aristotle's dynamic motion theory, Newton's theory of light? Disproving known scientific theories is as important as discovering new ones, but how is one supposed to patent the former?

The bottom line is that money can't credit one for making a discovery. The credit is in the discovery itself. One day you might understand this.

I am not saying they didn't use other peoples work, doesnt mean what they have done isn't special and doens't deserve credit. Let them lock it down for 10 years or so...

So they took something that was free, based their work on this and now lock it down and in the process locking down the free work as well because their design depends on it? That's like taking what is mine and claiming it as your own.

Apple is so closed source you can't even make hardware that will work with their computers - let alone software. Microsoft is open up to allow for better integration, Apple will never do that.

See, here's the thing, everyone hates apple except those who wanted to be different and spent a fortune on something they believe is better. The spend the rest of their time convincing the world (and indirectly themselves) that they made a good investment.

If you look at the way apps make their way onto the iPhone you will see exactly why Apple is bad for open source, and infact any source - if they don't like it it won't work. There in lies their problem.

The Apple haters are having a field day, no surprise.

Excuse while I work on my mac that has been on for weeks doing serious design work... without crashing or slowing down.

Most people don't actually care. They tend to have better things to do than feel animosity towards a computer.

Seriously - you go on about it like that is some amazing achivement and that if a computer is not from Apple it will crash and slow down all the time.

Do you really want to compete with a 11 year old PC ?

Apple's can't do this kind of stuff because they are toys - not business machines that gets real work done.

Its okay, carry on baiting people. Ill leave my mac as a nice paperweight while using my more useful and higher powered Toshiba. Ill give the mac one thing, it handles itunes better than Windows. So its useful to use with my iphone and iPod nano.

You remind me of that web clip when that internet bridge troll goes "Steve Jobs has a PC!" "Gay people celebrate 9/11 like its their birthday!"

I'll send you a real paperweight if I can have your mac.

Yea, put it to better use. I've seen a pic of the mac so will pass, who knows where it's been.

Surely there is a name for somebody who criticises other for having an opinion, and stating a preference ... Oh hang on I, remember now it's called fascism ... I however find your opinion of what "real work" is, a tad insulting to my intelligence. (Referring to the last image you posted).. I am going to assume that you are in some way or form involved in administering the said machine that you so happily attempt to impress us with, and as such I will be generous and address you on equal terms, one software/systems engineer to another. If my environments did not allow ANY headroom (as is evident in your screenshot, 16 threads across 4 cores all pinned at 100% utilisation), and my systems felt the need to swap 18GB to disk, quite frankly I'd get fired, for bad capacity planning, and bad administration.

Now as for "real work" the majority of us know that this actually happens on tried and trusted UNIX environments such as AIX and Solaris, and databases such as Oracle, Informix and DB2. Until you've seen a system handle 20K transactions per second into a 1.5 TB database, while only lighting up 8 cores, I do not think you are entitled to comment on what "real work" in a computing environment actually is. Or perhaps you were running your boinc client on the box just to try and get your stats up?

Ignorance is not a nationality boet, it's just a state of mind ...
