Is gaming ram worth it?

well mre in a sense you are correct but your also wrong

maybe memory wont make much difference but overclocking your cpu further with better quality memory will result in real world performance gains in terms of your cpu

i know for sure i could get my q6600 to 4.0ghz stable if i had better quality ram that overclocked better

if you not overclocking your wasting money on performance ram because as mre pointed out there is like 1-3% gain

I don't OC my ram at all as there is no purpose to it. However I've OC'd my cpu +1GHz.
 
i have 4 gig corsair value no issues there, but agree if you can go the fast and proper then do they are better.

i do but i still need a FSb pushing 440-450 mark which means 880-900 on my memory

unless im confused how do i unlink my cpu and ratio

What kind of board do you have?

When you unlink them the Ram just stays wherever you set it and then you can use whatever FSB you like for the CPU.

At least that's what I do with my board.

I'm running 2 x 1GB mushkin EM2 which is stock 800MHz 5-5-5-12 at 850MHz 4-4-4-12. I could possibly push the frequency up more if I wanted to but I prefer stability :)
 
Mebbe what you need is a bit of technical background here.
Your standard RAM is fine, will get the job done and you can merrily go off and enjoy playing games and what not. What Gaming RAM will get you (other than definite Overclocking potential) is improvements between the Memory GPU and CPU. You may not notice the differences if you are not looking, but they are there. I’ve done some of my own testing and it’s more Motherboard and CPU dependant – with a good motherboard – the difference is definitely noticeable, with the average motherboard, not noticeable at all.
Put it this way
– RAR compression/decompression on average Joes board with Good CPU and standard RAM – 800 KB/s
– RAR compression/decompression on average Joes board with Good CPU and Gaming Low Latency RAM – 825 KB/s
– RAR compression/decompression on Advanced board with Good CPU and standard RAM – 940 KB/s
– RAR compression/decompression on Advanced board with Good CPU and Gaming Low Latency RAM – 1200 KB/s

– XVID encode 1Gb MPEG Video on average Joes board with Good CPU and standard RAM – 3m32s
– XVID encode 1Gb MPEG Video on average Joes board with Good CPU and Gaming Low Latency RAM – 3m28s
– XVID encode 1Gb MPEG Video on Advanced board with Good CPU and standard RAM – 3m27s
– XVID encode 1Gb MPEG Video on Advanced board with Good CPU and Gaming Low Latency RAM – 3m03s

IF Value for money is the discussion, then NO it’s not worth it. If you want performance, then Just the RAM is not good enough, you need the system that supports it!

That's bollocks, I have my ram running at 1033 and my latency has dropped from +107ns stock to -80ns and I'm on CL5!

The difference is very much noticeable! my PC is extremely responsive, I don't know how you unlink your RAM and FSB while overclocking though what chipset are you using? my AMD could do this but not my intel.

Your statement would make sense if your OC'ing (freq & latency) actually yielded any real world performance advantages, which i guarantee you it doesn't.
 
urm, you did read "low latency" as the conclusion? which is all that gaming Ram is. The bottom line is that Lower Latency Ram does make a difference, that article just points out that DDR3 Ram is pointless @ the moment when compared to DDR2 Ram at the current cost/performance point.

Edit: There was an old study done some time ago before the new Generation Motherboards which proved that Low Latency Ram was no better than standard RAM, that was later disproven with the newer generation boards.

Well that's one review but mostly about wasting money on DDR3.

I've done my own tests on my own PC... for the average user the difference won't be worth it but gaming is where the difference is most noticeable and worth it. ;)

The ram I have is not that expensive btw, I have the mushkin 2GB 1066 kit which is R650 odd at prophecy(I paid R800 for it a few weeks ago) this ram for me does not run stable at 1066 without adequate cooling so I'm running it at 1033mhz with a FSB of 412mhz but then again this is not a true 1066 kit but a 1000 kit hence the price ;)

There are arguments for and against. The choice is yours to decide, I have done my own physical tests and proven to myself that there are improvements, sometimes going against things I've read on the internet.
I think the real question is about the additional cost associated with Gaming ram, as apposed to cheapo Ram. To that end, it's nearly impossible to answer that question, as each person has his own view on where the value lies and how much he/she has to spend.
But performance Ram is pretty cheap now:
Generic 2Gb DDR2-800 R500,00
CL4 LL 2Gb DDR2-800 R599.00

For the performance gain, I'd be willing to fork out an extra R99, but not everyone would.

Edit - Yes, there definately is more expensive DDR2-800 CL4 Ram out there, but dont you shop around for the best price?

You're probably a very "special" person being able to notice the possible 1-3-5% (whatever it is it's TINY) difference, and in that case, I take my hat off to you good sir!

1. Only NVIDIA Chipset can run unlinked ram:fsb ratio. That's Nvidia nForce 590, 680, 780 and 790i Chipsets for Intel Platform.

2. There's no such thing as gaming RAM as its just a marketing ploy. In game performance No low latency RAM is going to make a game playable which was previously unplayable. Even playing with DDR667 RAM compared to DDR1066 RAM will not make for a significantly better game experience. The person with 4GB of DDR557 will have the same experience with the guy who has 1066 "gaming ram"

3. Low latency/ High speed RAM is purely for overclocking. Manufacturers don't want to actively encourage overclocking so they say these performance series like Tracers, Reapers, Platinum/Titanium Series/Team Dark etc... are gaming RAM their not. Their purely for overclocking.

4. Is gaming RAM worth it? well no any DDR2 1066 CL5 set will do. If you run 1:1 you'd need 533MHz FSB to max out the RAM at the least.

Oh my word, just cos benchmarks pick it up doesn't mean it's gonna result in a real world performance difference.
If you're trying to insinuate that buying "gaming" ram will give you noticible extra fps in games, then um, ya.

1. Agree - Intel have a special memory controller chipset from P35 and up that does something different, but is still linked to the FSB
2. True, I'm calling it Gaming RAM, where as it's just low latency RAM, but gaming is CPU and GPU dependant, Textures are loaded before playing, which is the only time low latency RAM will be used to swop between CPU and GPU.
3. I'd rather say it's for the Purest, Enthusiast, I run my RAM at the Rated 4-4-4-15 and have to manually set it, as it's not detected, is that an overclock? nah.
4. Again, it's the enthusiast vs the budget, depends on your system build too!
