a proper business wouldn't do that..
This is SA telecoms dude, none of them are 'proper' businesses.
Being a tier-1 provider, ADSL accounts are not their core business. They are not obligated to provide a news server, nor are they obligated to upgrade and maintain it. ADSL account sales are like pocket change to them - they don't care if people migrate because they still have their business clients. Also don't forget that most of SA's sites are hosted by IS, that's one of the areas where they make their money.
That is the reason why people said to stop talking about it - not because they wanted to be selfish, but because they didn't want it to break. Unfortunately some people were too thick-skulled to realise this when it was pointed out to them, but they went ahead and did it anyway. Now it's broken and they have only themselves to blame, nobody else.
I tend to disagreeI still think that most people found out about the news server through word of mouth.
People who stumbled upon it here for the first time, would not have made much sense of it...
Maybe a rare case that the forums caused people to download from the server.... But sure (ie.. guessing/assuming) most were told from friends..
Would be a nice poll actually...
If you used the news server, how did you find out about it?
a) MyADSL forums
b) A friend
c) Other forums
d) Other
Im curious what the results would be!
For me, it would be (b)
