IS news server

Gbps not GB/s.

Once the games are over they'll pack up their equipment and leave - we'll get none of that capacity.

So whats the point of Government claiming that we are going to have all the capacity? surely they should be saying "they will being their own capacity"

We will have that kind of capacity soon anyway if MTN get all its fibre sorted out before then and there are other providers looking at fibre in the same breath.
I could be wrong on this so dont quote me :D

My only problem with this is, that we have all struggled on said unnamed server for some time now, and I cannot remember one instance where IS or any ISP offered some kind of explanation, I have logged numerous calls with my ISP about said problems, but never get any answers.

So parading around here and telling everyone not to talk about fight club is rediculous, its easy to say that is said server is working, but its not, should everyone sit in silence and just hope that the thing resolves itself.

If telkom does something, everyone is up in arms, shouting and branding signs, but as soon as the spotlight falls on IS (the poor little underdog), everyone hush up...BS, they should also be dragged out into the street, and slapped like a prosi that gave you the clap.

Its rediculous to sit every month and hope something happens, maybe the IS administrator falls asleep, and he's download or p0rn fails and there is a spike in said service's speed.

The only reason I am still with openweb (other then the great service), is because of the openbrowse proxy. But every month its taking me a little bit more of self convincing to stay with IS.

I am sick and tired of pointing at IS, and getting the "woe is me" repsonse from them, or just silence. Telkom's call centre for ADSL sucks big time, but its not nearly as useless as trying to get an answer from IS.

There...rant is now off, oh yes, IS, sit and spin you @@##$%^$#

If SA had proper uncapped, then we wouldn't have to use Usenet to share files.

Personally I prefer Bittorrent, but having to UL as well is a killer when a 3GB monthly cap is the standard.

Do yourselves a favour and try an Easynews or Giganews account for a month and you'll see what speeds are supposed to be like - iow what they were like not too long ago. IS is not interested in improving things - that much should be crystal clear by now.
They won't, because the same people who say that it should be out in the open are too cheap to buy an account.

Does anyone think this will improve when more international bandwidth is available?
It should be easier for more news servers to be created in SA due to more available BW for replicating, but i spose considering International BW would be cheaper that we would be able to use giganews or one of the 100's of others.

News servers don't just pop up, they depend on the Tier-1 provider. ATM in SA there are only 3 such providers who provide DSL access. That's why we need to take it upon ourselves to look after what we have.

What I don't appreciate is ignorant fscks saying that it should be out in the open or that everybody was once a noob so it's ok to broadcast it. If you're a noob then fine be a noob, nobody cares. But be an intelligent noob and restrict your communication about the subject to PM as many people used to do. Don't be a dumbass and ruin it for everyone.

you cannot use IS local with this can you? so its not about being cheap, its about not wanting to spend 70 bucks a gig on these server when you can get it off the IS news server

accounts with them are really cheap but the bandwidth we use to d/l from them is flippin expensive

i would not be using the Is news server if we still had 30 gig int for 199

Exactly!!! And if someone is financially so well inclined that they can pay to use giganews the entire month, why are they even posting in this thread??!! It has absolutely nothing to do with them..

Am sick and tired of this whole idiotic mentality of "not talking about the news server, in case someone new finds out". Guess what....they are entitled to find out, they pay for their connection!

The problem is not too many connections, the problem is the slacker sh!tty service that we are getting from the eternal victim IS

Of course the problem is too many connections and it is because IS knows they dont have to improve things.

Why? Because no matter how far they let their "sh!tty service" degrade you are going to give them money again next month.

The suggestion was to try a commercial service so you would know what the local one was like not that long ago.

o well i dont care anymore, yes but calling ppl cheap when those accounts cost next to nothing is a rather cheap shot considering its using international bandwidth to download

not everyone has 1k or more to blow on an int news server

yes the IS news server is slow but i've never been a selfish person and i dont intend on becoming one, if anything being cheap is keeping the IS news server for yourself because your to cheap to spend a ton of money on int new servers

You all go on abt ah we must tell the world.. i think IS should start charging a fee for their news server, because you ppl don't understand... and one day... when cached stuff comes down at ten and uncached at 0.5Kb/s then you'll b!tch and moan abt it, and how crappy it is.. but who is too blame then

And BTW i used to get 430Kb/s constant on cached.. i have noticed lately that sometimes it now goes at 340Kb/s then to 380Kb/s then back.. guess what that means.. cached speeds arent gonna be full speed like we like if it carries on at this rate.

Well I think IS should have their normal news server and introduce a paid version, all the leechers aren't gonna shell out money to use the server so they'll be stuck using the free one. Internationally you get paid servers and it actually works pretty well, you get what you pay for. Now can we just lock this and let it slide to the bottom.

I wonder if all the people complaining about IS are downloading 30 gigs of legal stuff every month.
There seems to be quite a few freemason wannabees here.
I say no more on this thread...

Read again, the suggestion was to try an international server in order to realise what the IS one was like not too long ago. Nobody said anything about forking out R1k a month for bandwidth costs + account costs, just to try an account for one month with a couple of gigs international bandwidth that most people can afford.

I don't recall anybody saying keep it for yourself either. If anybody has a question then by all means ask, just ask somebody via PM. People, including myself, would be more than willing to help out. It's odd how people keep missing this part. Going out of your way to promote it, and helping out people who are curious, are two different things. The first is being selfish to existing users, the second is being helpful.

Anyway I don't care anymore. If you guys insist that you know better than others when it comes to network infrastructure and particularly usenet infrastructure then go on and promote it. Just DON'T bitch and moan at IS when your speeds drop to 0.5kB/s, because you knew exactly what your actions would entail. They have no reason to upgrade their news servers because it's not a selling point contrary to what you may think. They're selling you local bandwidth, not a daily fix of porn and movies. And I don't buy that you people are using it for Linux distros and other free open source stuff because they have a great FTP server for all that.

If people want to find out about how to download whatever they want, they should make an effort to find out and then ask if they have any questions. But existing users going out of their way to promote this even to people who weren't necessarily interested initially, will obviously make them try it just because the idea of free downloads sounds so tempting. The bottom line is don't help someone who doesn't need help, you're only shooting yourself in the foot.

Now I might have been inclined to help you guys get full speed uncached, but if you insist on fscking with people's speeds then you can ****. In this respect, I WILL be selfish because obviously people don't appreciate it when you help them. As I said, I don't care anymore. I'm getting my full speed which I would have shared, so if you guys want to screw up your own speeds then go ahead and do so. Just don't complain later on because you'll only get a big 'fsck you' from quite a lot of people.

PS: killadoob I still have your PM's where I went out of my way to help you and make things easy for you to understand when you were getting started, so I would appreciate you not calling me selfish or cheap.

yes i know hj i just took that being cheap as a shot at us for helping other ppl

if it was not meant that way my bad

i just get angry when ppl call me cheap for using the IS server, maybe i took it wrong so again i am sorry and i know u dont use the int server

also just havin a bad trying to get RS to work on vista

yes u did help me out more than u can imagine and i wont forget it :)

I actually do use Easynews to use up my initial international allowance at the beginning of the month. And nobody is cheap for using the IS one, you do what you can afford. You're only cheap if you use the IS one, screw with other people's speeds, and then don't try an international one if you can afford it.

lol - I think there are quite a few of us that do that. The 2gb loyalty bonus taunts me on a monthly basis - I dont even bother with the survey anymore. :o
