In a civilised country? Probably. In a shithole like SA? You know the cANCer gives zero ****s.
 
Where is the money coming from in order to do these name changes? that is what I want to know

Only comes to these threads to comment on the people that are commenting and voicing their concerns.

Why do you not rather comment on the money being wasted by your beloved government when they do this, while the masses starve and go uneducated?

Much like it has turned out for every other rename,it'll stay PE in all but letterheads and signage,and waste more money

Nobody of substance cares about you or your childish leaders attempts at relevancy :)

There's nothing wrong with rename places if a Government wants to.
AFTER they've ensured a very low poverty rate, proper housing, available medical and infrastructure services etc.

Doing it before that is just a farce to garner some false votes with baseless hopes.

All good, am sure the money will never run out, we can just keep going further into debt as a country.

But gangland HQ is down in the Cape so that honour would be undeserved.

We need to strap the sports and culture department. Serves no purpose other than providing jobs to ANC cadres.
 
People use their native tongue to give names to places.
To me Germany is Germany.
To the Germans, Germany is Deutschland.
To the Spanish, it is Alemania.
To the French, Allemagne.
Italian: Germania.

The only time I call Cape Town Kaapstad is when I'm talking Afrikaans (not often).

To me, Grahamstown will always be Grahamstown, and P.E. will always be P.E.

If I spoke isiXhosa I would call Grahamstown Rini (as most locals do) and P.E. iBhayi (as most locals do)

Time will tell if these new names stick. I still don't see Makhanda on any road signs.

I am also all for name changing. It means we have less money to spend on poor South Africans. You know because changing the name of cities is more important than the future of the actual population...lols

He probably thinks its fine and has a family member who is a family member of someone in government who got the tender for changing the name on every board in PE. He would be all for changing names then I guess...

If its go a good reason then yes.

Like if a place had a important name before it was renamed by whichever colonial power then perhaps that a good reason.

or

If something important happened there since the colonial change..

or if the name of the place is Hitlerville, might be worth a rebrand.

I agree with you, Name changes have always been a thing throughout history, all over the world. People will get over this and move on.

I am not sure what triggered the latest bout of name changes though. It's also problematic that objections to the name changes appear to have been ignored to some extent. And the timing of the decision to move ahead with the renaming could not have been worse - with South Africa facing possibly its worst ever economic crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic.

As to those who claim that name changes will not stick - that is not correct. Name changes will stick, they just take time though (especially if they are difficult to pronounce :ROFL:) e.g. Your kids will most likely end up calling PE by its new name Gqeberha.
How many people remember Eastern Boulevard (Nelson Mandela Boulevard in Cape Town) or Verwoerdburg (now called Centurion)?
