IS Shaping traffic/ Network Problems

You can get SAIX local accounts at WebAfrica. It is substantially more expensive than IS though if i remember correctly something like R19 P/MB
 
So if im right there are tooo many uncapped users and thats why its slow, same with the news server?
 
I don't know how they can use that as an excuse. SAIX works. Always. Do they have fewer subscribers?

I dont think uncapped users would really use the local news servers - I know I try not to and I'm on a normal account. I think it's just a matter of network congestion.
 
Ok, so news server : network congestion (everyone blames everyone else for talking about it), uncapped account : network congestion (??)

My guess is they're selling more accounts than they have the capacity to handle. They make use of IPC via Telkom, data has to go through the IPC cloud before being routed elsewhere (whether it's local or international is irrelevant). Therefore the cheap local accounts can very well be taking an effect on international users.
 
I dont think IS would be mixing their local and Int. bandwidth. They are clever, if they thought their network was congested they would most certainly do something about it. ie : shaping of torrents....
 
*sigh* IS is not impressing me much right now. I've also logged a complaint with regards to these speed issues with openweb!. As much as its not their fault, they need to get IS to pull up their socks, this is really not good enough!. Some websites won't load correctly, i get time outs almost all the time. AVG won't update of late, TV.com won't load either....

I mean, this is just the one website, Google is much the same, DigitalBlasphemy is the same etc etc. Local isnt as bad but its also not that fast.... COME NOW IS!!!.

All traffic is local until it gets to their servers, right?

It's not mixing local and international. Ok this is what happens - the DSL lines belong to Telkom. In order to move a user from Telkom's network to IS's network they use IPConnect. All data that a user transfers has to go through this cloud. It's here where the congestion seems to be happening - seems like they don't have enough capacity between themselves and Telkom, and because they're dealing directly with the beast, increasing capacity would cost a fortune.

It seems like cheap local accounts are taking its toll on the entire network. Remember the days before local only accounts when local traffic (including the news server) used to fly? It would be nice if we could get an official explanation from IS regarding the general network degradation, but I would wager that there's probably a problem with the IPC cloud.

But it could also be put down to bad planning and maintenance that IS did not foresee an increased user base?
 
Yeah could be that as well. All these factors could be collectively contributing.
 
If Sasol ran out of fuel at their filling stations, are the consumers at fault or Sasol?
 
If Eskom runs short on capacity, they impose restrictions. If Sasol had to run short, they would impose restrictions. IS is undoubtedly at fault, they should stop selling accounts until they can get their capacity problem sorted out.
 
I totally agree, but seeing as though they are not i would he "normal" in saying that they either do not have a problem or cannot see that they have a problem.
IS in a way has imposed restrictions by means of restricting/shaping torrents during the day. It could be possible that due to the upstream bandwidth of torrents that the network becomes degraded/congested. If you set your uploads to full and try surf a website you will notice extreme slowness, however, when downloading at full speed and trying to view a website this slowness is not as bad.
 
well if i don't throttle my uploads, they FLY compaired to my downloads - unacceptable. If i wasnt on an uncapped account, this would mean that my cap goes mostly to uploads which is bull!.

5kbs - 8kbs is Dialup, not Broadband!.

IS needs to consider suspending signing more people till they can sort this cr#p out
