It will always be a debate around economy vs health.

But in this country its muddied by the fact that our government fscked around with the vaccinations for so damned long, and have absolutely screwed the pooch on bolstering the health sector over the last year two decades.

With the TB and Aids numbers we have seen over the last 20+ years, you would think that the medical sector and hospitals would be high up on the list of governments priorities but apparently they are nice to haves. So here we are and god help us all when these village idiots get the NHI rolled out.

No it isn't.

Poverty is a death sentence, especially in South Africa.

Some scientists say yes, some say no.

The debate isn't economy versus health, because damaging the former has its own dire health consequences.

We do, but apparently the chicken littles and end is nigh guys rule the roost. Remember when it hits close to home you're going to know, you're going to wish for harsher lockdowns.
The same could be said for economic harm. I wonder how many of the lockdown lovers have lost their income and their savings. How many now depend on handouts.

And don't y'all gimme that "hospitals overloaded and government needs to implement whatnot to alleviate pressure on them" codswallop. The government has had ample time and money since April last year to do something about this. What they did was squander both time and money.
The worst part is that they primarily needed additional equipment and supplies, not staff. The most effective treatments have turned out to be pretty standard interventions rather than the high maintenance methods they were trying a year or more ago.

It is always a debate around economy and health.. in whatever form you want it to take, even when it relates to poverty and other such things.

The debate is just more stark now because its so clearly in everyones face. Of course being an election year, the government will never openly state that they're prepared to accept a certain level of death to keep the economy even vaguely ticking over as that nuance will be entirely lost on the vast majority of the population.

The success, in my opinion, is for all people to follow the basics such as sanitizing, mask wearing and social distancing. We do not need over the top restrictions if we all comply.
Just my two pennies worth.
Sanitising at shop and mall entrances is a waste of time. It serves absolutely no useful purpose. It is literally security theatre. As is wearing masks outdoors. Pointless and encourages reduced compliance.

It's a pity the restrictions are applied to all (by default) but aren't applicable to all (by choice). The peeps who missed the booze ban prediction must be the moer in

If you are thinking we are messed up, just look at Australia. They only ordered enough vaccines for 4% of their population and showed no interest in more. As such they dont have open orders and are last in the queue. The Delta variant has entered Australia and has started spreading fast. They have no real way to stop it.

The UK that's been vaccinating like no tomorrow, is seeing a sharp rise in increases due to the Delta variant.

I also see that pilots are dying due to the Astra Zeneca vaccine. Supposedly the air pressure. So not good either.

The best time for a lockdown is when the whole world is at a lockdown like now.

No. Focus on the vaccination programme, which has been a disaster. If those who want & are eligible for vaccination are not vaccinated soon, how many more lockdowns are we going to have to endure?

There isn't a debate between economy and health. They are both facets of being alive.

If you put the lockdowns to a referendum, the vast majority of the population would probably much rather live with risk of catching the coof than die from certain starvation.

I am not entirely sure that would be the case, but even if it were the vast majority of the population look at things through the lens of the micro scale whereas the government (in theory) is looking at things with a macro lens. Individual people in general are not able to make the hard calls that would be required in a situation like this.

Here is the thing. There are just so many vaccines, and everyone wants it, not just us. So its coming out in drips and drabs. We will get, what we get, when we do.

In Europe they have been blocking vaccinations to foreign countries, as they want to use the vaccines themself, so thats causing further delays and issues.

Face it, its a cookie jar, with many hands trying to get cookies, but some like the Europeans are keeping the lids shut

100%.

Only a handful of chicken littles and Karens will vote in favour of it.

The government doesn't make decisions based on information at a macro level. They actually cannot. They make the decisions in the same way that everyone else does. By pretty much guessing. Except their guesses are magnified by 60 million, whilst the guesses of individuals are kept down to a level of individuals.

This is basic economics:
https://german.yale.edu/sites/default/files/hayek_-_the_use_of_knowledge_in_society.pdf

This is why the only actions by the government should have been those that are constrained by individual rights, that is that the use of force is only valid for the protection of individual rights.
1) Asking people to wear masks.
2) Asking people to work from home if possible.
3) Asking people to put hand sanitiser for their customers.

How can you starve? If you have no money go on SASSA. Stop being so pathetic. You have a roof above your head, drive a nice car.

Some people live in shacks, it leaks terribly. They can tell you how it is to starve. There are people way less fortunate than the useless politicians that complain. Ah shame, they cant goto Woolies, or watch rugby matches live (while drinking beer with their friends).

Honestly there are kids that barely gets food in their tummy, they sleep on wet floors from the rain, they goto school hungry not having eaten for days. White people (and I am white) are such pathetic crybabies. If the virus hits informal settlements, millions will be dead. And they dont get to drive to private hospitals and complain. They have to make do with what they have, and that's not much.

Its really pathetic reading through some of the comments here.

1. If people didnt abuse alcohol the way they did, then it wouldnt have been banned. They didnt listen.
2. If you didnt keep your safe distance, compared to partying without masks as many did, then it wouldnt have spread.

You can try point fingers at the government, but they have to look at the larger picture, you however dont. At the end the SA public is to blame, and innocents will die, because of other's stupidity.
