Is this the worst programming job ad ever?

Dafuq?

More like R8k - R15k and then a decent jump after one or two years

Have to agree there, unless it's a seriously specific coding language which is not popular. Then you might luck into a big starting salary

That job position is far too vague. I wouldn't even take a second look at it. Not due to salary - but due to how there is zero information there and the racial thing..

Orania wants a programmer. :p

I'm not looking - but maybe you should take a trip out there to see if it's the job for you? :p

Me with my atheist tendencies and indian gf? Don't think that ****'s going to fly. :p

EDIT: I meant the ad seems like it's from Orania, just in case you thought I aimed it at you personally. ;)

LOL

No, I got what you were trying to say. :p

I started off at an inflation adjusted R7k. Climbed quickly though, after the first year it doubled and then climbed by about 60% per annum for the next 2 years.

R300K gross per year for a fresh graduate

If they are offering R15k PA for a graduate the job is going to be insanely hard.

Perhaps if you have honors, but I'd still be weary of what they would ask of you.

What's wrong? With BEE someone has to level the playing field. :D Don't understand the male part though.

It is too vague though. Not to mention the geography fail. Ekurhuleni isn't a location. With people like this I'm worried about our IT companies.

Can anyone here actually confirm this? Is there a programmer on MyBB who started with 300k p.a.? I've never heard of a fresh graduate earning this much.

I started out as an Programmer with about 25k per month back in 2000. But it wasn't my first job. I graduated as a BCom in 94. About a year later we took on a bloke fresh out of college. Not even a uni degree. He started on about 18k per month. He still works there and is now one of their top devs. No idea what they pay him now, but he bought a fancy 4 bed townhouse and a BMW .

We met up in London about a year ago and got ratfaced in the West End. I don't recall him moaning about the exchange rate :)

I know a few grads who started off earning R15,000 a month in Cape Town and Joeys. They are good developers though.

Just to give you some perspective street sweepers earn R6,500 a month and they don't have student loans to pay off.

There are companies willing to pay a decent salary.

R8,000 a month isn't even enough for you to buy a car and move out of your parents house.

I do not see anything wrong with this advertisement. If a company wants to hire a white male, why can't they? Nobody must complain when 98% of all job ads are looking for AA black males, so why is everything so wrong when a company wants a white male.

This is so wrong on so many levels and people having problems with that are plain common dose. If I want to hire a white male, an indian male or a coloured female, why can I not advertise it like that?

Fu** this, this is just pathetic complaining about this ad.

Agree, they want a white to work for them so they asked for a white. Seems fair to me.

Why would you look for, say a coloured female, specifically?

Not necessarily referring to a specific gender or race Bar0n, but let's say I have a company and my staff equity is correct and I have place for one more appointment - any race or gender, why can I not decide, why, if I want to appoint a white male in that position, must my company be crucified because of that decision.

Hell, even if I have just started off and want to employ my first worker, why can I not employ a white male or a white female? Why must people frown upon that? That is my decision and no one can force me to appoint anyone else. The same goes for any other person who runs a business and wants to appoint a certain individual of gender and race. Anyone wanting to employ a black male or female is okay, but anyone else asking for another gender and race are frowned upon.

The past 11 years my business are offering services to international companies, as well as local companies. We do not deal with BEE companies at all. Their requirements are too much of a headache to me and my staff. They can rather go elsewhere and pay more and get what they get. I also do not allow them access to our online products and services. I have a business registered abroad and trade in that name, I do not need to be forced into stupid legislation - similar to this post.

I don't see the point of appointing a specific race instead of simply the best person for the job.

Dunno where you get those figures. I only saw R20k monthly for a "fresh out of varsity" programmer in Sandton a few years back.

Salaries suck bigtime for newcomers to the programming industry. R8000 starting salary seems about right. You'll probably be promoted fairly quickly.

When I was still very active in the job market I use to see a lot of Cape Town places offer R20K for fresh varsity grads, then it all stopped two years ago about this time. I saw the same jobs, same companies started to drop their offers down to R8K within half a year.

The market has changed since the recession.

I earn less today as developer with 8 years experience and a university certificate than what I did 10 years ago as a furniture salesman with only matric and 3 years sales experience and I'm not even taking inflation into consideration.

Precisely.

Banks, Insurance companies, retail companies, finance companies, government companies - all will appoint a certain race and gender over experience and qualifications. I know of a 27 year old female, with no tertiary education appointed in a very senior position as a Head of a forensics investigation department dealing with Internet and commercial crime related offences. She has never had any computer experience and was not quite happy with her 'redeployment', but happy with her R280K salary hike.

Why was she appointed into a position were she had no experience, education or anything else? To fill the quotas.

This is one of about 200 positions in various organizations I know about.

So, in practice your theory of appointing the one who is fit for the job, does not really happen. It is all about BEE and complying to quotas first. Then it is about looking after friends and family, then only they look at experience. Anyone in the right position will know that.

So, for me, I am fortunate that I am free to appoint who I want. If the best candidate is a white male, I will appoint him. If I have a second, third, fourth or even tenth position and the correct candidate is white males, so be it, I will have a department with 11 white males then. I am not forced by BEE to comply with quotas. I am not held hostage by companies requiring me to confirm to BEE policies. I just simply refuse them access to my products and services and I simply refuse dealing with any such company. In fact, I am declining banks, insurance companies and even certain government institutions on a daily basis.

So again, if I feel that a white male may be suited best for a certain position why can I not advertise looking for a white male. There may be a number of reasons for my decision and appointment.

Companies are required by law to comply with BEE, not always by choice. You'd be shooting yourself in the foot by refusing to appoint BEE candidates on principle and/or thinking that it hurts BEE policies.

It's one thing to advertise the position and then appointing a white male, it's completely different to dismiss all other candidates straightaway and only advertise for a white male. If you're racist, why the hell not a competent white female then? Are you so sexist and racist that you insist only white males can work for your company?

This ad makes no sense if it's not seen from a purely racist and sexist point of view. Nothing prevents you from applying to BEE positions, and companies do appoint non-BEE applicants if a suitable BEE candidate cannot be found.
