BTW. Seems to me more like telkom, rather than the public, could be sued, for "an attempt to extort" money from it's clients, by creating, without notice, a situation whereby they could profit from the unwitting public...

My contract with TI allows me to use 3GB blended bandwidth then an unspecified shared blended bandwidth and the 30GB local bandwidth. Due to them deciding to allow an unspecified shared blended bandwidth it would be difficult if not impossible for them to legally enforce payment for any usage allocated to blended bandwidth.

Why does this happen when I'm away from home for a week? No doubt the tap will be switched off by the time I get back. My heart bleeds for Telkom not. This pay-per-gig model is pure greed. We should get uncapped for the ADSL & line rentals we pay anyway.

Telkom announces uncapped. The fees stay the same for speeds.

2-3 days of frenzy as most people "run free" and revel in the freedom. Then, as seen on the forum in the last few days...boredom sets in...

Hard drives fill, DVD's are costly...

As mentioned by one poster, concerning UK uncapped habits, a few copy data back and forth between each other just for the hell of it...

The euphoria is over in days, with no more strain on the system than usual...

If a supermarket's lights went off and the security were forced to leave the building would you immediately start filling your bags and pockets with goodies and then leave? Pretty much the same thing really.....

Expect, unlike the manufactured goods in the shop, telkom does not produce bandwidth. Once the equipment is in place and paid for, its almost pure profit.

So what are they really stealing, some electricy, some light down a piece of fibre. You could argue that they are stealing telkoms profits, if say they made it a free download day and telkom allowed everyone to download as much as they wanted, they certain would make a loss, but this would be a loss in profits, so at the end of the day day telkom still made its 'hard earned' Rand.

I think a better scenario would be an overworked and underpaid employee, who always works overtime without extra pay, and who decides to leave early on a Friday because the boss is away. Is he really stealing from the company considering they get so much more from him?

This is exactly the problem with internet bandwidth. It is the few that ruin it for the many. And those few are totally blind to this!

The exact reaction you refer to here, although to be correct I think it is a few instead of most, is the reason even overseas they are looking into caps now. Some people just cannot use anything in moderation. They waste and download any old cr_p just to use as much as they can. After all it is "free" if it is unlimited. Read the numerous threads on here with members comparing their internet use and bragging about how much they managed to "milk in a month" to prove this.

In using my 30Gb local some months I fulfill requests from other people that I know as there is just nothing more I really need to download. In fact most of my downloads end up being things I really do not need.

Even if we called it electricity then that would still be theft. You can spin it as you want but using something that you are not entitled to is immoral.

Think of any other company that offers a service and not a product. Once their facilities are in place, and paid off, should I be able to go and use those facilities without paying? After all they have no ongoing costs.

Hmm interesting example. Speak to someone who has decided to leave early without the absent bosses permission before and see what happened to them when the boss found out. I think you'll find the boss was none to happy and in all likelihood disciplined them. I think you'll find from the employees (most Telkom users on here) perspective it was owing to them but to the boss (Telkom) it was "stealing" productive time from him!

Do what? By all accounts it appears to be a glitch? And if it isn't they have probably deliberately not publicised it as they are aware of the number of people out here who will milk the system unrealistically and put a strain on the capacity. Most users are just not mature enough in this country to use the resources we have at our disposal sensibly and within reason.

Out of curiosity. What do you think Telkom buys from SAT-3? Usage or bandwidth? Once you've figured that out, realise what Telkom sells to us and perhaps then you'll see what the problem is and maybe, just maybe figure out where Telkom gets most of its "broadband" money from. Oh, that's right - us, the "power users." Not the old grannies pwning their e-mail accounts. And they get that money from ridiculous caps that are guaranteed to be hit by anyone who dares to actually use the internet.

And have you noticed what kinds of caps are being "considered" internationally? A few hundred gigs. And you're comparing those of us who are chomping down on 20GBs to those overseas who download terabytes worth of data? Wow, wake up.

P.S. Please learn the difference between bandwidth and usage.

Exactly. It is not putting a strain on anything. Why have they not fixed it, if it is causing so much trouble/strain?
