Is WhatsApp the SMS-killer?

On my Blackberry it works nicely, however loaded it on the sisters nokia 5230 and it killed it was forced to uninstall

I hardly see this as a draw back!
That's like saying any product or service that is not used by everyone is not good enough! BTW, you cannot SMS someone who doesn't have a phone, is that an SMS drawback? Don't think so!!!
 
whatsapp cut my sms down to a 3rd of what i normally use, which is a huge cost saver if your
sending 100's of sms a month!
 
Whatsapp has almost exclusively replaced SMS for me, it let's me chat to all my mates in canada and Europe and it works out cheaper as well. We still pay way too much for SMS's in this country. That is why blackberry is exploding in popularity here, especially among student.
 
SMS will NEVER die, it works #why fix whats not broken. it primary purpose will always be notification. Can't image ABSA send RVN codes as WhatsApp messages
 
Does whatsapp use less battery than the others? if it does then i'll sign up
 
why are people comparing this to mxit?? Mxit you must log in, add people, terrible GUI. Those complaining about the cost of the data, most of us are in an office/home most of the time so thus connected to wifi and i dont care about the data required to receive a message as in the overall scheme of things its cheaper than sms's

You are peny wise but pound foolish - the cost on recieveng and sendingon whats app is so minimal compared to just sending just 1 sms, i pay for 2 phone bills (mines and my wifes) since we got whats app we keep in contstant contact but my phone bills have come down significantly.
 
I reset my WhatsApp stats beginning of the month, so far:

Messages sent: 281
Messages Received: 321

Total Bytes sent: 560 KB
Total Bytes Received: 1.1 MB

I'm connected to a Wireless network most of the time, so the only Cellular Total Bytes:
Upload: 102 KB
Downloaded: 208 KB

That is cheap.
 
Been using Whatsapp for a while now. Very simple to use and +- 1000 messages for 1.3MB is wonderful. Works great on GPRS and seeing that you can now get smart phones on R99 contracts I can see a huge take up of this service.
 
Excellent app..use it daily, EDGE and 3G, mostly wireless and home..far superior to SMS, and fortunately most of my contacts has the app!
 
It just won't kill SMS because if I understand correctly you have to PAY to use the app after a year... Yes... only free for 12 Months... After a year it's going to die
 
Excellent app, especially over WiFi.
Free for a year, then $1.99 per yearly contract to use it. Definitely worth it since it is available to Nokia, Android and IPhone.

Going to kill operator SMS revenues, for sure.

Yea US$1.99, more like R13... Just don't know what type of payments they accept.
