Serious fail man! I use afrihost uncapped at home, and have a 20 gig account for the office. I also subscribed uncapped accounts for some of the directors at my company. I've had enough. I've done 11 gigs on my uncapped account so far. Got to my PC tonight and no internet connection. Checked the router, authentication problem. Phoned, sorted it out. Itunes wanted to update, so I clicked accept and install, and the download was painfully slow. I then went to speedtest.net, and my down and up speeds are at 0.40 Mb/s. I tried to call Afrihost call center, who, closed. No man, yesterday at the office, we were without internet connection for over 30 mins, also due to authentication issues on the account. Tried do phone them on their support line, hanged around on the phone for over 20 mins, without anyone picking up.

WTH is wrong at afrihost? I will be going with mweb at the end of this month. How can you run your call center till 6AM? Your product is squarely aimed at the general public, that normally uses their bandwidth after hours.

We've all been taken for a ride by Afrihost, I really think they had no clear idea what they were getting themselves in for. You can cancel your uncapped accounts with Afrihost and ask for a refund. I've now swapped to Mweb and so far so good with them! Just a note on Mweb: They will charge you half the sign-up amount if you join after mid-month.

Dan C, just ask for a Refund at least you should get something back.

Thanks for the email:)

Kindly log into your client zone and have the domain cancelled online.

Once complete let me know so I can arrange a refund for you.

Have a wonderful evening!

Have a great day & please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Warm regards.

Lache.

This is pay by the gig, not uncapped speed. Frustrating as hel. My backup WA prepaid account is giving me full speed. I was considering there R950/100gig deal if it meant decent speed, forget it. MWEB here I come. If its going to be slow, let it be uncapped at least.

The above seems to be a standard response. Got almost the exact same reply, word for word, when I threatened to cancel my account after they wouldn't explain their throttling policies in full.

Pfft, I was told its Telkoms fault since they upgrading all the DSLAM's. I said bull because i dont sync at megs still and i have friends who do sync at megs on the same DSLAM and exchange as me and they with MWEB and all is rosy.

How do you go about this cancel with a refund business. I dont mind paying pro rata for this month but it has become unusable. Browsing is at a standstill. I have a torrent going now at 8:10pm and its got over a thousand seeds. 2 meg line and its blasting away at a steady 5kbps

That's sad. So it's not only uncapped. Pay by gig was fantastic the last 6 months.

I was actually in a meeting yesterday with afrihost regarding something else. At the end of the meeting i asked how the uncapped accounts are doing.

They told me that most ppl mistook the uncapped accounts. They are there for day to day activities for browsing etc. Not for heavy downloading of torrents etc.

Gian even sent out an email warning their current subscibers but most chose to ignore that.

Why bring a company down so much when they did so much good for the broadband market.

I understand that the problems you are having are not to do with downloading but with autenticating. They are having a lot of issues with their radius servers.

Log into your clientzone and open a ticket up there. They will respond, sometimes even phone you and help you sort it out. Just mention to them that this is an ongoing problem and they need to speak to their developers about it.

Why? Because they lied about their product in terms of false advertising and changed the AUP/FUP several times. They deserve to burn for their bait & switch deceit.

I also received this from them:

I trust that you are well.:)

many thanks for your feedback. We have been aware that users in the Cape region have been experiencing problems since thursday, where various exchanges were affected. In addition the line testing that is taking place, we find that users are also experiencing variable speeds that range from 4-8/10MB, & as the line speeds are not stable the result also in higher latencies & slow speeds, also where the lines drop the connections.

What i can is have telkom re-sync your line on the exchange as well.
Have a great day & please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Even having made sure my sync was correct with help from Telkom my connection still moved at a glacial pace. The cancellation process as they explained it to me is to email them, then to go into your client zone and cancel your service. Then just email them again. After that it's the wait for a response on the refund. I've only gone through this process today so no idea when they'll actually respond. They say it will take time due to the high volumes of cancellations. I cannot imagine a business which would allow so many customers to leave without an attempt to do something to mitigate the situation.

I always thought that's what 1-5gig accounts were for... So uncapped is for day to day browsing, thanks for clarifying...

@vonnii I also got something similar from afrihost, went through the resync process and still no luck. This it would seems is the standard response.

I was experiencing super high latency for international and local, and slow downloads, this is on their per gig account. I switched to my Web africa account, got full speed and normal latency!!! So I guess you get what you pay for.

I think afrihost has over sold their bandwidth, they could be shaping their per gig accounts now, perhaps doing us all in, biting the hand that feeds them it would seem. However it could also be further up the chain with the Internet Solutions.

Gian and his company are quiet about what evers going on, but what ever it is, they must be haemoraging clients, looks like Afrihost has lost its shine.

@evilsee, last night I switched from my Afrihost account to my Gconnect pre-paid and on the Gconnect I had full speed whereas Afrihost was at below 2MB at the best of times. Now with Mweb uncapped and I have perfect speed again. There is definitely something up with Afrihost and the customer service is absolutely horrible. I'm hoping Mweb is better capable of dealing with this since they must have planned this long in advance instead of just jumping on the bandwagon.

Whats interesting is this for local pings:

Wed 400 - 600ms
Today 100 - 180ms
This Evening 54ms

Now thats for local traffic anything over 80 ms for local is bad, international latency yesterday was at times approaching 900ms ( today is was about 300ms), and this was on a 4meg line with only me on it ( I disconnected the router from the rest of the network)

All I want to know from Internet Solutions or their laptog Afrihost is what the 'effing hell was going on!!!
