If anything, the brand equity in SA is derived from Nelson Mandela and the defeat of Apartheid. So how far is Oliver Tambo from all that? .... not that far.

Are you directly comparing Tambo to Mandela?
 
I'm saying it is all part of the same message we send overseas, the message of a free, democratic SA after Apartheid... so in this case, yes, I am putting them in the same boat.
 
Mandela and De Klerk were joint Nobel peace prize winners - why has nothing been named after De Klerk?
 
No I'm comparing Tambo to Mandela and De Klerk. They both played instrumental roles in order to get to where we are today. It took courage for the man at the head of an apartheid gvt to release Mandela, as well as to declare our first truly democratic elections. I'm not saying that he was better than Mandela or vice versa, but that they were both declared peace prize winners for a reason.

Don't mean to sound too harsh here but Tambo barely accomplished half of what these two have, yet he has an airport named after him in his honour. The question (which hasn't yet been answered) is what has been named after De Klerk in order to honour him and his achievements? That's my point, especially since we're talking about brand equity and what not.

Okay you are going to land at Oliver Tambo Airport. Then take Mandela Ave, that leads to Oliver Tambo Ave and then turn left into Mandela Rd which then leads to Mandela Lane. From there you must then find Oliver Tambo Square and Nelson Mandela Hotel No.5 should be there.

Ja boet,i wonder or they are going to force me to rename my "long drop tiolet,we use to call it"die klein huisie"but with all the english friends that did not understand ,we had to rename it.So now rename again,no way i`m not going to name it after a politician

Actually it does serve the whole continent - some/most arrivals never leave the international departure lounge...but are going elsewhere in the world or africa - we are the most centrally connected hub.

many african airlines aren't allowed to fly into europe

And again I ask you, how many foreigners actually know who Oliver Tambo is?

And why couldn't they just leave it Jan Smuts in the first place? Look at what he did and what he fought for.

IMO the decision to rename the airport isn't very democratic. What do you think most people's answer would be if you asked them whether we should spend a few million on renaming airports and cities or that we should spend that money on housing, and service delivery and spending it on things that actually make a difference to the lives of people who so deperately need it?

Changing names is so childish!

Why cant people grow up forget about our troubled past?

Why go backwards towards apartheid again?(apartheid reversed)

Its just plain stupid!
 
Airport Name changes

Hi there.

I would just like to acknowledge my frustration with our goverment. Recently I became aware of the fact that they are changing the name of Johannesburg international airport to O R Tambo Airport.

What irritates me is the fact that this is going to cost us Millions firstly and secondly, what relation does this have to anything regarding fowarding us as a nation? I mean we changed the name from Jan Smuts to Joburg international because we were a new South Africa. Changing it to this new name will without a doubt cause certain ethnic groups to feel a bit irritated.

The reasoning for the name change is because of how hard Tambo fought for freedom. I respect that but not to the degree that it's costing me money and reflecting badly on South Africa.

I mean everyday we are told to move forward and live and breath the NEW South Africa but HOW can we if the past is always brought up?

To make matters worse the PE Airport will be renamed to Matthew Goniwe Airport if no counter action is brought forward.

This leads me to the following point.
Where and when are the public notified of these applications of name changes? It's like Goverment keeps it a secret and then passes the name change when the expire date occurs.

Tshwane is a perfect example of this, Most people in Pretoria didn't know about the name change until it occured. They did however get it right to counter the name change due to steps that were taken. However on the news they still refer to Pretoria as Tshwane even though the name has been revoked.

So finally I would just like to hear your opinions on this matter. I love the New South Africa but certain actions in this the new South Africa are more racist than the Apartheid regime.
