Kallis choked again

Kallis put an enormous amount of pressure on the lower order. We might have won this game but in future we shouldn't depend on bowler to bat the way they did yesterday because at least 50% of the time it's not going to happen.
So what you saying is he should rather have a bash and get let's say 14 off 15 balls rather??? Like against England...??? Where this strategy was so successful...????

No, first prize is that he maintains the required run rate at the very least.

Lower order? The pressure was on the middle order which finally delivered. SA's middle order has been quite average of late, and Kallis is definitely been playing better than the middle order.

Kallis was good yesterday, it wasn't easy to score runs off those indian spinners and he did it at a reasonable rate and they kept the run rate manageable. The middle orders job is to bad in pressure and the rate never really got past 8, which is always gettable in the last 10-20. His target would have been to bat through and try launch a few big shots late on, even if he scored at a slow rate who would have got those runs? He got just over 20% of the runs we needed, and the fact is guys like AB, Van Wyk and Du Plessis are there to accelerate the innings and score at better than a run a ball. Kallis is there to be solid and build a strong innings and a good partnership with someone in the top order.

Ten years ago I might have agred with you but in the age of the first 10 over powerplays and 300 run totals being the norm I have to disagree. If you look at the teams which have won the last few world cups you'll see Sri Lanka and Australia - both of whoich have won the World Cup by starting off quickly and relieving the pressure on the lower order players. The problem with the plan of a player starting slowly for his first 15 overs and then taking off falls apart a bit because the plan never calls for him going out before he starts taking off.

The fact is that with our top order batsmen the rate went from 6 an over to almost 8 an over with 20-odd overs to go. Only AB hitting an incredibly quick 50 kept us in the game and the likes of Johan Botha and Petersen can't be relied on to consistently hit a strike rate of 200+. We got lucky on Saturday.

Australia set India a massive target of 360 to win in the 2003 world cup final. Oz top 4 fired on the day setting the target. Batting 1st no pressure, just go out and set a reasonable target for the opposition, which they did. India, chasing down the target, went gung ho at the top of the innings, as you suggest is the prudent tactic when chasing a big total and the net result, they lose by whopping 125 runs.

1996 world cup final OZ vs Sri Lanka

Australia set Sri Lanka a modest target of 242 to win. Sri Lanka's openers go cheaply 9 off 7 and 6 off 13, the number 3 consolidates the innings scoring 65 off 99 and the number 4 and 5 batsman bring it home, 107 off 124 and 47 off 37...

SO to summarize, the function of the number 3 is to stabilize the innings if early wickets have fallen, to see off the new ball and to patiently build an innings with others batting around him...

Against England chasing a measly 172 for victory Amla and Smith got us off to a fantastic start with 63 for the 1st wicket in 14 overs and we lost comfortably!!! IF ONLY Kallis had played his usual patient knock of 40 off 65 balls we would have cruised to a comfortable victory.

It's pointless arguing with haters.

So many so called cricket "sperts" fail to understand that important basic statement you made.

You have to play the situation by its merit. And I think Kallis did it. He could have batted a bit faster, but in the period he played it was more important to accumalate the runs

Trouble is all the so called experts wrote SA first before they even batted, i mean by the 15th over some had written us off. When we were batting most of these experts had written us off from the 10th over.

All good and well to stabilize an innings but my only problem with kallis is he does not read the situation, he only plays one way. So if we need 10 an over kallis will plod along holding the innings together and we still lose. The man is pure legend but not someone you want at the crease chasing 9 an over. Does not matter his innings was very good and i hope together with kallis we can all chip in and fight like we did against india. When the pressure is on we must think of the indian triumph and no more of this choke talk because we put that to bed now.

Yeah, that's me. That game was gone!!! That we picked up 9 wickets for 29 runs is nothing short of biblical!!! In rugby terms it was like being 36-7 down with 10 minutes to go then winning the match 38-36. In soccer terms 3-0 down with 15 to go and winning 4-3. You get my drift?

As for Kallis, we gone over this so many times after the last 10 years. It's as tired as the choke talk.

@sandmanm.Totally agree. The key to a successful run chase is that one guy needs to hang in there for as long as possible irrespective of weather he scores slow or fast. Now given the pitch conditions on Saturday, where the ball stayed a bit low and slow,I can totally understand Kallis strike rate.Even Amala was slow by his own standards.
We would have lost the 438 game had Gibbs not stayed in for so long, and instead relied on a few guys to 'chip in with a quickfire few'

Kallis was not to blame for this. Not alone anyway. Blame falls squarely on the entire team. Chokers, every one of them.

Not all of them. Amla & AB very unlucky.

Amla and AB unlucky. Steyn, Morne, Tahir and Peterson did their job. Faf did a decent job with the bat, Kallis should have batted through, he failed....again

Smith shouldnt have even attended the WC, he was a passenger through out, now we wait another 4 years because selectors were stubborn in letting him retain his role and letting him step down gracefully
