Keeper's Rig - Help me Build the Ultimate PC

I think im going for the H60 - not much difference temps wise, but much lower profile, newer, quieter, and cost less too.

So the only question now is:
-Maximus IV Extreme ROG Mobo + 64 GB Vertex 2, or
-Cheaper R1600 Mobo with a newer, faster 128GB SSD

Anyone else have input on this? I think the choices are a big difference, I want the best setup

Meh, I think I'm gonna go for better RAM...

Here's my latest Build Idea:

- ASUS Maximus iV Extreme ROG (Rev B3): R3,811.00
- Intel Core i7 2600k 3.40GHz: R2,609.00
- Corsair H60 Hydro Series: R700.00
- OCZ 60GB Vertex 2 SSD: R1,300.00
- Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 2000 with DHX technology + DHX Pro Connector (4Gb x 2): R2,169

Anyone got any better ideas than this? :confused:
(I was thinking I could buy the other 8GB at a later stage If I feel 8GB is not enough)
 
SSD wise, perhaps wait a bit as I think we are still waiting to see a drop in SSD prices? Maximus is definitely overkill, so if now then cheaper mobo + 128GB SSD for sure (will you need 128GB though? :p).

H60 is good.

Dom GT is definitely overkill, stick to your value RAM.

Fancy mobo = 0.5 - 0% performance difference
Gaming ram / 2000 = 0 - 1% performance difference over 1333MHz, you'll never notice the difference.
2600K pointless if you're not going to OC.

60Gb is okay I think, i'm using 47Gigs and i'm not even careful - how long do you think I should wait for a price drop?

Maximus is overkill, Dominator Ram is overkill...so what should I do, buy cheaper mobo and cheaper Ram?
 
You don't get the full 60gb do you? With my 128GB drive i only get 119GB.

Think about it this way, you are less than one new game away from having no space. Take more space because you will need it more than 1% extra performance the mobo will give you.

Pocket the savings for the next upgrade if you don't feel the extra GB's are needed.
 
I'm only buying the SSD for Bootup time and Advanced 3D Applications, 60Gb will be fine :p

Besides, i'm sure even if the game is installed on a normal HDD it will still play okay - just extra loading time (and if it doesn't, I could always clear some space for that one exception)

Yea but people confuse buying the most expensive with the best. Well it depends on the price difference of the memory.

Pocket the savings is fairly simple dude, in 6-12 months you can take the 3-4k you saved on this rig and buy a faster one. You could even chuck in a new vga card. Obviously if the price difference is 500 or something then go for the more expensive stuff but that mobo for 3.8k is just a waste. I also think comparing hugh hefner's performance model to memory or motherboards is a bit warped :D. Perhaps it sounds better if i say you have to choose between a car worth x amount and the same car worth 30-50% more than the x amount but goes 2km's faster. Would you buy the more expensive marginally faster car or pocket that cash and go upgrade the engine at some extreme engine making place? :p
 
well I made 22k for 3 days work, so im not worried about "saving cash" and then end up sitting with an average Mobo and Ram.

I'll rather put out 3.8k now for a proper mobo and have it, than R1600 now and another R1600 later (i'll have 10 SATA's instead of 2 mobos with each 6)


I think the Mobo and RAM are quite important in a System, I'm just not sure If i'll be able to clock it by myself - i'm new to the overclocking scene...


How difficult is it to set RAM Timings? Can I set them independantly of the CPU clock or do I NEED to oc the cpu to get it close to 2000Mhz?

Sigh.... is the Vertex 3 really that much faster than Vertex 2? I really only need around 60 Gigs, I don't game that much anymore to be honest

Thanx for the feedback guys - is there anyone that knows about RAM timings and such who will help me get the RAM Running at 2000 MHz?

Just get the a Sandforce-based SSD IMO.

The OCZ Vertex 3 drives' max read speed is 550MB/s and max write speed is 500MB/s, so it is almost twice as fast as the other SSD's.

Alternatively you could go for the 60GB SF1200 SSD's and if you think you need more speed, buy another one and set it up in striped RAID :)
 
I reckon get the stock and come back. If you only need a 60gb then only buy a 60gb. Get the mobo of your dreams.

Bare in mind this rig is for your enjoyment. Nothing better than opening a fancy new motherboard in all honesty. The look, the feel the sense of of being able to buy that bad boy is addictive. It leads to bad things though like hardware addiction :p. I would you stop worrying about the memory speed and just figure out what you want, buy it and start the fun :D.

It's as easy as pie.

You need 1333/1600/1866/2133 RAM. 2000MHz RAM will default to 1866 on SB. To run it higher it'll depend on your RAMs OC ability so you might have to up the voltage/loosen timings.

DDR3 1866 CL7 is better in most of the scenarios than like DDR3 2133 CL8. Due to the BCLK being limited to like 5% of 100MHz with normal cooling, you won't really be able to get memory speeds inbetween 1333/1600/1866/2133

The highest that I saw DDR3-2400 memory was clocked at on the Sandy Bridge, with a quick Google search, was ~2250MHz - see here: http://internalcomputer.com/introdu...andwidth-for-sandy-bridge-technology.computer
