would like to find out if there are any guys in the titled mentioned area/s that actually have ADSL??

my brother got told today that they can't even lay cables in his area, which was quite depressing after paying an outstanding R2k account from 5yrs ago, after receiving no bills/notifications/emails/calls.

and then if there are guys in that area/s that don't have ADSL, but do indeed use something like 3G, what and from whom and how stable is it??

That area is still very much in "development" phase
Although it's an old area it was not residential initially
i have lots of friends close by, more towards glen marias and most of them cannot get a line
but it's more a complex thing where the complex has that fibre sh### installed and then rape everyone for dsl

3G, although with a weak signal, is very stable, IIRC a friend is using cell c
slowish speeds but constant/ stable and good pings(pretty much the same i get from my 1mb dsl)
he even got one of those external directional antennas but cannot find a cell c tower in the area, so maybe find out if he has line of site to a tower and then find out who the SP is

Our offices are in Glen Marais, where we have a 4mps line. Only problem we have it cable theft but they replace it quite quickly. Also use Cell C 3G with no hassles at the office and home(terenure). Check the coverage map on cell C and Mtn and see if your brother falls under the radar so to speak.

I have lived in Pomona Extension 2 since 2003. We used to have ADSL and sometime in 2008/2009 we had no landline phones for almost a year. After which Telkom told us that they have had to replace telephone cables 32 times due to theft and they would not be replacing them anymore. They came with an alternative of WCDMA wireless phones and modems. The phones were great but on the internet side although reasonably fast was very expensive at the time. I had to discontinue the service after incurring a postpaid bill of over R7000.00 in one month.

At the moment I am using 8ta HSDPA which seems to be the fastest and most reliable of all the 3G networks there. With their 2GB + 1GB promo for R149 it is reasonable. I personally hate contracts, but I ended up signing for the 8ta R199/pm for 10GB 24 months contract. Note that the R199 does not include VAT - they don't advertise that in their marketing. You only see it in your bill.

So, this area could as well be in the rural areas even though it is just 2km from the OR Tambo International Airport. The Neotel and I-Burst wireless footprints don't touch it. If you live there like myself you are stuck with 3G networks.

Funny enough, fibre optic cables are being laid around the firms next to the suburb - one cable runs along the road separating us from the firms. When I asked the fibre laying contractors there they told me they were not aware of any plans to include the suburb. Sad but true!!!
