The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the leader "passed away from a great mental and physical strain" at 08:30 on Saturday (23:30 GMT on Friday), while on a train for one of his "field guidance" tours.
It urged people to follow his youngest son and heir apparent Kim Jong-Un, who is aged in his late 20s and until last year had no public profile.
He died at 69. I'd like to go that way too.
So Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, Gadaffi - all that's left is Mugabe and Internet Explorer to kill off.
