That does not seem right - but just to confirm, you don't shut it down between reads?

Nope. It just falls asleep after 10min. Even if I manually switch the screen saver on, it may take 20-40sec of holding the power button down. Then my PIN entry prompt appears, then I have to swipe to clear the ad.

The screen and backlight are nice, but the software and interface is terrible.

Glad I got the 32GB version though as with 36 ebooks, they take up 1.24GB already.

Yours does not seem right - but this post may explain it. Seems you have some bloated books on there? Mine has only 4Gb (I think), but usually I have 300+ books installed, with 1gb+ free space still (Just checked)

PDF's and kindles are not good friends. Maybe you have some image heavy PDF's loaded?

I've not followed this thread properly - is yours new? You could try a reset if not already tried? Tried contacting AMZ support?

EDIT - the only time I hold the button down is to reboot - which is rare. I touch my button to start reading and usually let it fall asleep when finished - taking 3 secs max to continue where I left off. Maybe there's a setting powering yours off?

I hate to break it to you, but it did that before I had these 'bloated' books. Most of these big books are purchased from Amazon. It took a while to start from the get go. Maybe you should tell Amazon to not sell bloated books? Come on this sort of patronising attitude is not good, ok?

Yes my Kindle Oasis is brand new. It arrived this week.

No there is no setting powering mine off and it doesn't power off because it shows ads. Maybe it's the ad display.

Sorry - dude - just trying to help... I don't get my books from AMZ, but I can tell you that something does not seem right with the performance of yours. Hope you come right.

To contact Amazon support won't help because I did not get mine from Amazon direct but by MyUS. So I would still have to pay to ship it back to Amazon on my own dime and then I'm not in the mood for that. I'll just have to live with it. It's a sh-tty device but the screen and backlight are nice.

Do you own a Kindle Oasis with Ads? Maybe that's how they operate. What could be wrong by the way?

I remember some smart person in this thread claiming the ads don't display outside of the US.

I may ask Amazon to disable the ads.... haha. Been a customer since 2000.

Seems kinda odd. I'm looking at a folder of around 50 books on .mobi format and it's 202MB.

Wonder why the Amazon files are so big.

Some of my books are actual manuals and academic books, that Amazon sells. But the thing was slow even before I downloaded them. I think 1.0GB is from Amazon, I have one PDF file which is 17MB big.

The funny thing is that the waking up thing sometimes occurs faster, sometime slower.

So Kindle is definitely not an Apple product, far from it, but the screen as said is gorgeous. Easy on the eyes.

I bought mine from amz, but shipped via comgateway.com (Oregon free delivery and tax free state) and they shipped to me. I did contact support once - and they helped.

I originally had a few non-paperwhite models - not sure if that is what you have with 1st generation, but the step up to paperwhite is amazing.

Awesome, not sure what edition my one was but it had a full qwerty keyboard and not touch screen , definitely looking forward to the new experience

Only feature I kinda miss (although not really) was that some of my earlier models could read to me... My paperwhite has no speakers so that feature is long gone. Think I did a few JHB/DBN trips listening to quite robotic "audio books" xD

Must admit, kindles are amazing but am really a sucker for a well produced audio book. I would have upgraded my Kindle ages ago if not for that...

There is some software (open source too I believe) that will convert epub/mobi to mp3 audio books. Although could never be as good as say Stephen Fry or the likes. I would only bother with audio books if on a long trip driving though.

A friend purchased my 6th generation (with ads) whilst in the USA: I've yet to see an ad.

In addition, I have over 100 books on the Kindle - most AZWs - with plenty of room for more.

By the way, the US Kindle does display US special offers in South Africa as part of the screen saver. The device knows it's in SA because to buy an Ebook I have to change my country back to SA so it can bill the VAT. I suppose using a VPN may fool Amazon into letting me purchase as US.

My Kindle has always been on US because it’s cheaper.

No VPN required. Just a US address loaded on your account.

Do you have an audible subscription as well?

I think the new ones with Bluetooth lets you download the audio as well which is probably why it takes up much more space.

I would hope there is an option to turn that off.

I have never deleted a book from my Kindle and had it for years so there must be well in excess of a 100 on there all bought from Amazon.
