Kindle Paperwhite

As for the guys who say they’ve never seen an Ad are you sure you know what an Ad is in this context?

It’s the Amazon book it shows you on the Lock Screen when you open the cover. It’s never anything but Kindle books, so never really feels like an ad.

They don’t try to sell you anything else.

For me it’s the problem that the SA store never ever gets the specials as advised by eReaderIQ and the like.

So most of the time we are paying 3-4 times more than we should.

Well worth switching. I pay $3.99 or less for most books.

My cover was a separate purchase - and not linked to the turning the unit on or off. I think my sister has one like yours and is a newer model. My on/off button is at the bottom, next to the power plug.

As to ads nope - still the same default image that shipped with the model on the lock screen - but I've rarely connected to wifi, and have never bought a book from amz. All are loaded from my PC. (Calibre)

I "purchase" a minimum of one - and as many as five - free fiction ebooks a week, thanks to a daily newsletter. It has saved me a fortune, introduced me to a number of new authors and threatens to keep me overwhelmed with reading material in my retirement :)

Ditto. And I have my Kindle permanently connected to my WiFi.

Oh I have the button just don’t need to use it because of the cover turning it on.

As for the Ads, I was just making sure people aren’t overlooking it because it’s really such a non-event.
 
New paperwhites are less +20% discount on the Amazon website, but only if shipped to a USA address <sigh>

$30 on standard Kindle, $40 on Signature - but (as I said) only if shipped to a US address i.e. no VPN required.
 
Annoyingly if you buy anything beyond the Kindle itself even if it’s as the essentials bundle then Amazon will ship everything separately.

Which means you either need a consolidation membership for mail forwarding or pay through your arse as each item is shipped separately which means you may as well have bought the international version.

It has been about 10 years since I last ordered goods that required a physical shipment from Amazon.

In "those" days Amazon might split a shipment, but then it was always at Amazon's expense.

That’s not the problem.

If you have a shipping forwarding company they’ll just send them on as they come in, which means you’ll pay the base cost for shipping for each product.

Then the $29.90 cover suddenly becomes almost double the price, negating the original savings.

If you upgrade your subscription with your shipping forwarder it can be consolidated but that also negates the saving.

I hear what you are saying, but surely a Kindle - shipped as a single item - doesn't fall into that category. ?

No not as a single item it won’t.

But I wouldn’t have one without the cover and getting that later or via other means amounts to the same problem again.

The third party covers never last quite as well.

I think the new ones with Bluetooth lets you download the audio as well which is probably why it takes up much more space.

I would hope there is an option to turn that off.

I have never deleted a book from my Kindle and had it for years so there must be well in excess of a 100 on there all bought from Amazon.

No I don't have audible. No audio books or versions loaded.

The other day I had an option of adding an Audible to the purchase for $7.99 extra but nah, not worth the money.

Some books are academic which means they're bigger.

Here's an example:

  • Text-to-Speech ‏ : ‎ Enabled
 
The new Paperwhite is faster than Oasis though. Still I went with Oasis because of the overall functionality.

I sidedloaded some small .mobi non fiction ebooks purchased on third party websites. I see to get the cover to show I had to use Calibre. Emailing them shows the generic blank cover.

MyUS sucks in that regard. Tenso gives 30 days free storage and allows consolidation until that point. You'd think warehouse space would be more expensive in Tokyo.

Yeah but even bottom end paid for Aramex Global doesn’t do it, so not really surprised.

Either way 30 days wouldn’t be enough.

It would have been enough for me and usually the 30 days are enough to get several products over a few weeks and consolidate them. Preorder items are something else.
