Kindle Paperwhite

You're posting on a public thread therefore implying that you'd appreciate some help.

Be nice to the Amazon helpdesk agent - you'd be amazed at how helpful they can be.

If you don't want people to interact with you don't post in the thread.

My 'buddy' was not insinuating anything - you interprets it that way and then went a little bit berserk for no reason.

PS: many people use Calibre to sideload books so the advice/query was perfectly reasonable - your reaction wasn't.

You have some amazing mind reading skills. Thank you for telling me how I should think and also what your buddy thinks. Maybe he should just word his responses better? Then again I did not ask for help.

Maybe people need to check if someone asks for help. Here nobody asked for help. Besides we went through this already a few pages back. I already explained that it's not because of something I did.

Man I'm gonna leave this here. Next time please don't patronise me. People here are shocked that Kindle books can be quite large and the first response was that I had obviously loaded PDFs which was not true. It seems that maybe people often read some fiction books which are perhaps short and tiny?

I also detect some fanboyism here about how amazing Kindles are.

Amazon helpdesk support actually sucks. I've dealt with them and they have sometimes caused problems for me such as sending out two shipments and I had to refuse at least one to avoid being double billed. Then they'd threaten me with bills for their own incompetence. It really depends who you get and lately it hasn't been good.

Refusing a shipment is not easy when the two shipments from two different couriers will arrive the same day, because Amazon rep was too lazy to contact Aramex to figure out why there was a delay.

No what gets me is that people assume a poster is totally clueless and just because they have no problems, the poster is doing something wrong. I just don't like that sort of disregard. Besides I didn't ask for any advice.

Yes I know Amazon support is good, I've been using Amazon for 22 years. But this is an imported item and Amazon thinks the item was shipped to Florida, so I'd have to ship this back to Amazon on my own. They won't reimburse me. I'll have to pay Tax and custums duties again on the item when they ship it back to Florida and so on and I'm not guaranteed that it will work as I think the issue is Kindle file size. The product doesn't work properly with larger Kindle files. All purchased on Amazon.

Thanks for your help and thank you for being a white knight.
I bought a 2hnd kindle in South Africa that was bought in the US. It broke but still had some warranty left, so I contacted Amazon support... they shipped me a brand new one no questions asked with a return shipping bag for the broken one and a week later they sent a courier to collect the broken one.

I was rather impressed.

Lol, dude you need some time off the internet. Biting everyone's head off... hope I'm not next.

Hmmm... I wonder. But I'll end up paying tax again. I'll have to try this. Now this is good advice. Not theoretical, perform an RMA as though I was born yesterday. :)

I didn't pay any duties on the new unit, Amazon organised everything.

Probably best to just say the Kindle is dead and won't turn on, it's easier than going through a million troubleshooting steps for something you already know is faulty.

After Gen11 was launched, I checked in on Amazon almost daily to see if it was possible to buy and ship directly, but gave up earlier this year. Last week I decided to check again, and was surprised to see that they now seem to be readily available locally:

Final landed price for mine was R 3961.73

Kindle - R3003.13
MyUS FedEx Budget - R 585.15
Customs/VAT - R 372.45

A solid R1500 less than the local pricing I've seen.

For which model? My 11th gen Paperwhite was R4k off Bidorbuy.

What's the price difference? With both models out of stock, Amazon doesn't show the prices in the comparison table.

$189 normally. I paid $145.

I see Takelot have it for R4,999 so still just about R1100 saving going direct.

So far must say I’m very impressed with the official cover, but need to spend a bit more time with the device before I comment.

That reminded me to check if Takealot has covers yet for the 11th gen model, and I see they do! And some are pretty cool. Awesome stuff, ordering one now.

Original ones? Because that was a big reason why I went for the import as I couldn’t find any locally.

And very glad I did.

Can't say I much care. My last Kindle case was some random thing and it was perfect. What's the difference?

My last one just fell apart after a couple of years, especially around the hinge edge.

It says Kindle on the front but I don’t think it was original, maybe not sure. But it’s also that fake leather stuff.

The new one I chose the denim look which is also meant to be waterproof and easy dry. Has a harder plastic edge frame and just seems much nicer as a whole.

The magnet also holds both on the front and the back when flipped open which is nice as that often annoyed me.

I have a random case that opens with a zipper, it has rubber arms in the 4 corners holding the Kindle inside, so if I lie on my side it's nice to balance that way.

When I'm sitting I have this heave tablet arm that I've attached to a chair in which I can place the Kindle (so now I don't even have to hold it anymore).

I lay on my (right side) with mine quite happily propping it up with the cover.

Would imagine left side is fine too if you just put it in the other way around.

Don’t really need anything so elaborate when I’m sitting.

Can't say I've had durability issues, but that's a sample size of one. Tbh I'd prefer a pouch for my Kindle over a case, so I'm still looking around for something that's perfect. I don't particularly want anything attached to my Kindle whilst I'm reading - just a safer means of storing it when I'm not.
