Did you know this? I had no idea. I thought different people just pronounced it differently, especially here in die kaap where die mense sommer just drop out letters from words, but they're actually two different items!

Nb. don't bother wiki'ing it, their entry is incorrect.

Cape Malay koesisters are totally different to the plaited koeksisters you may know. For starters, they’re spelled (and pronounced) differently, dropping the ‘k’. The Cape Malay version is more like a doughnut, spiced with ginger, naartjie peel, cinnamon and aniseed, cooked in syrup and sprinkled with coconut.

My aunt (bless her departed soul) used to make them. Thanks for the recipe! :D

We just used to call them Malay Koeksisters.

I saw a documentary last year, where they showed the different Koeksisters of South Africa. There is actually like 3 or 4 different ones, including the Malay. And they went into history, how it was conceived and why..etc, etc.
So, according to them, it is all Koeksisters, just different varients and cultural back grounds and back drops.

I also prefer Koesisters over Koeksisters. Koeksisters are just to sweet for me now. I used to breakfast koesisters Sunday mornings when they lady came to deliver them when I still stayed in the Western Cape. When they delivered them they were still hot. To me that is the best time to eat them.

Edit: I haven't seen any places in Gauteng that sells this - then again, I was actively looking for this.

Interesting. I used to eat a couple of the donut variety some mornings when working in Woodstock and wondered why they would call them koeksisters when they are not. Never noticed the missing k.

Koesiesters FTW! Used to be a Sunday morning thing after chapel for most of my life. Fresh and warm from the bakery, or ladies in the area that sold them, rush home for some tea. Ahhhh! The plaited Koeksisters are just way to sweet for me.

The uppercrust bakery in Mayfair sells koesisters on a Sunday morning, but you have to get there early before they sell out

The best koeksisters are eaten cold .... crispy outside and filled with a lot of syrup inside.
