on one of my hikes up recently over Table Mountain our hiking leader Faizel said he has brought koeksisters with for breakfast.
i was super excited and when we stopped for a break he hauled out these donut looking things caked in coconut flakes.

i took one to be polite but deep inside i remembered very well this is not what my white afrikaans mother use to make for us kids.

it was ok, but i certainly wouldnt pay for one, will stick to the original apartheid koeksisters instead

lived in CT all my life and only found out that these coconut covered vetkoeks are called "koesisters" about 2 years ago. A lot of the local capeys pronounce words in their own way despite the spelling so I just palmed it off to that - still prefer koeksisters personally.

Sweet treats are made of these: celebrating a local delicacy on World Koesister Day

WE are firmly inside Heritage Month. Capetonians, in particular, are very proud people. We take traditions and heritage seriously.

Today marks a huge day on the culinary calendar – World Koesister Day.

True story. Those soft pillows of aniseed goodness have their own celebratory day on the first Sunday of September, though locals would argue koesisters are of international importance every Sunday.

You may have noticed our spelling of koesister – minus the second “k”. Koeksisters are usually the hard, plaited, syrupy sweet treats. Koesisters are their softer, fluffier, semi-spicy siblings.

We lived abroad for many years. And one of the experiences we missed most was koesisters from the aunty down the road, syruped to perfection with just the right amount of coconut.

That, accompanied by a lekker cup of coffee and deep inhalations of Cape Town air, was our idea of the perfect way to close out a weekend. So the first order of business upon our return to Robin’s Hood was to eat our way through the global koesister capital that is Cape Town.

Our goal: To try a different spot every Sunday. And so our adventure “The Great Koesister Skarrel” was born. Not ones to keep our findings to ourselves, we decided we wanted to take everyone along on our adventures through our live social media broadcasts, a virtual skarrel (road trip) in the Adams family car.

It’s become such a popular weekly feature. And the fact that we are able to support local business just warms our good-to-be-home hearts.

A Koesister is more like a vetkoek Lammington / Ystervarkie than anything like a Koeksister. The Indian guys also make something similar but they are awful compared to Koesisters.

Damn...I loved these cold out the fridge. They didn't last long in the house.
Agree
The absolute best
But not these Halaal ones without the middle K in the name
I do not fancy them one bit

Each to his/her own I suppose. I find these too sweet. I suppose its based on how we grew up. Sunday mornings, we used to buy a a large Tupperware Bakkie full of koesisters for R20 by the Aunty who stayed on the corner.

Here in Table View we dont get it, so have to make it ourselves.
