S'Thembiso Hlongwane

Johannesburg - Black people cannot swim. This is the reason domestic airline Kulula.com has given the department of labour for not hiring black people.

The department's Thembinkosi Mkhaliphi could not say how the company had substantiated this reasoning and referred further queries on the matter to Comair, the aviation company that operates British Airways and Kulula.com in South Africa.

Comair spokesperson Glenda Zvenyika declined to comment on Saturday.

The JSE-listed company is the first business institution to be hauled before the labour court for noncompliance.

"Our intention in the next two years is to deal with the top 100 (JSE) listed companies," Mkhaliphi said.

He added that the no-frills airline would appear in court on Tuesday for failing to adhere to the Employment Equity Act.

He said Comair was required to file a notice of intention to oppose and an answering affidavit by close of business on Tuesday.

"If no intention to oppose and an answering affidavit is filed as required in the notice of motion, the application might be heard in the respondent's absence and an order for costs might be sought against the respondent," explained Mkhaliphi.

He said if Comair was found guilty the company would be ordered to pay a fine of R900 000 and the costs of the application.

Sapa reported that the South African Chamber of Business welcomed the move but said government should be considerate and guard against damaging its good relations with business.

Li> Failing to prepare and implement an employment equity plan which would achieve reasonable progress towards employment equity in the respondent's workplace.

Submitting reports to the department which were not based on any existing employment equity plan of the respondent and/or submitting falsified reports.
Failing to submit a report to the director-general on the first working day of October.
Failing to assign one or more senior managers to take responsibility for monitoring and implementing an employment equity plan.
Failing to keep records in respect of its workforce, its employment equity plan and other records relevant for purposes of compliance with the Employment Equity Act

Why should a new company started by white investors transform? Its not as if it had an unfair advantage over black companies during Apartheid years which should be rectified. Kululu has small profit margins, they can't afford to pay black people a premium because their black. White people with qualifications are prepared to work for less.

Maybe its not meant to be a totally serious comment. Maybe they're trying to show the process as the farce that it is?

You said kululu. :D LOL ;)

Haha!! I think Syndyre is right. Well I wouldn't put it past kulula.com - it seems like something they would do. Um... aren't they abolishing the whole BEE thing?

Well, it's actually a 99% true statement. Have you ever seen a black swimmer at the Olympics? :D

Enith Brigitha? Anthony Nesty? Martiza Correia? Alison Terry? Charles Chapman, Jr.? (OK, he wasn't at the Olympics...but he holds world records for dwimming around Alcatraz and Manhattan).

We all know how "There are no good black golfers" and "There are no good black tennis players" turned out...

I assume that Mango's staff can all swim.

Reminds me of the Navy AA posts from the past week.
They can't swim either.

It's about the same level of thinking as that which created BEE/AA, i.e. racist and uninformed. :D

wait.. why do u need to know how to swim? Last time i checked plains fly above the ground and since most are domestic bound flights chance of flying over water is less. 2ndly there are things such as inflatable boats etc. 3rdly do they ask their passengers if they can swim? is there are discount if u can?

which reminds me.. airplanes are kinda weird in that in boats you have spare life rafts and other smaller boats to cover a huge if not all passengers on board. In planes, do they have parashoots for all? granted most accidents having one might not help, but if they had them, they could jump out and automatically set it to crash else where

Cause it better to make an emergency landing on water than on ground.

@krycor. Commercial airliners don't carry any parachutes but they do have plenty of rafts and other floatation devices in case of a water landing.

UK requirements
The minimum requirements needed

Age

Because of the new age discrimination legislation which came into force from 1st October 2006 all UK based airlines cannot set minimum or maximum age restraints on anybody wanting to work as cabin crew. For any international airlines the minimum age requirement may be set at 18, 19, 20 or even 21 and the maximum could be as low as 32.

Education

Most airlines require you to have at least 4 GCSE's grade c or above (or equivalent) with two of them in English and Math's. We would point out that if you have do not have theses grades do but have a higher education the majority of airlines will accept your application. Some airlines also accept that not everyone excels in school and therefore will overlook qualifications if they have gained excellent customer service experience.

Health

Good health is essential and if you are successful in the selection process, you will normally be required to undergo a medical examination.

Height

Most airlines require you to be no shorter than 5ft 2in and no taller than 6ft 3in. This applies to both men and women. This is for safety, as you will be required to reach equipment that is carried on board the aircraft.

Weight

The airlines do request that your weight must be in proportion to your height.

First Aid

Although having a first aid certificate is not a minimum requirement set by all airlines, it doe however help with your application for the position of cabin crew.

Able to Swim

Successful applicants will be required to demonstrate their ability to swim at least 25 metres, with some airlines its 30 metres.

Second Language

A second language is an advantage, however not essential to most airlines. We do however recommend having a second language, as this will help your application.

Customer service Experience

Customers are the highest priority, therefore airlines seek to recruit cabin crew who have enjoyed working and have excelled in customer contact positions. Also working with special needs, such as the elderly, children and infants and people with physical disabilities would be an advantage.

Passport

When applying to a UK based airline you must be entitled to live and work indefinitely in the UK and hold a valid EU or UK passport, which permits worldwide travel without restrictions. Some International airlines will accept all nationalities, but they must hold an up to date passport from their country of residence.

Good Eyesight

Once successful you will undergo a eye test. If you do not have perfect eyesight then glasses or contact lenses can be worn with most airlines.

So racism is alive and well in South Africa ... golly ain't that surprising ... well a century of ANC governance will fix it :).
