Lasik

LOL, I remember doing exactly the same thing. And having the same reaction.

:)

Just be more careful and ask the doctor to make sure everything's 100% fine, at the checkup

Whew, it's all fine :D

My left eye is now officially 20/20, and the right isn't as good but is better than my previous best-corrected-vision.

One thing I forgot to ask is what do I do about my driver's licence? Legally I'm supposed to wear glasses/contacts to drive, so I guess I'll have to get a new licence; do I just do the eye test there, or do I need a letter saying I've had Lasik and don't need glasses any more?

Uhhmmm? I never did anything of the sort. Just did another eye-test when I renewed my license at the end of last year. No issues. Perhaps call the Traffic Dept and check with them first?

I would not worry about the driver's license. You're allowed to wear contact lenses, so you're not going to get any problems for not wearing glasses.

Hi How is your eyes doing now 3 years after your surgery? I am considering going for LASIK treatment - but would like to compare feedback from others, tx!!

Not a problem. When you renew you license just tell the dude you no longer wear glasses or contacts and that you had surgery when they do your eye test. It's a non issue really as I only told them last year when I renewed and I had my eyes done over 10 yrs ago.

I've finally decided to get the Lasik procedure done. Can anyone recommend a good place to go to in Durban? And any specific person to go to?

Phone Umhlanga hospital, and they will point you to some specialists just up the road from them (the procedures are done at the hospital). I had mine done there years ago by Dr. JAW Carlisle but she has retired now as far as I know. You could probably still get hold of her and ask her for recommendations. I came to know of her after she did cataract surgery on my mom.

Thanks ponder. I found justlasik.co.za and they seem to operate from that area. The guy who does it seems like he knows what he's doing, judging from his profile on that site. I'm going there for a test next week to see if my eyes are suitable for the procedure.

Have thought about Lasik for a few years now. Two things stopping me. Cost and I am scared as sh@t of even the thought of anything medical :o

And I'm effing terrified I will lose my eyesight :(

Four years later and I am still effing scared of the op lol. At least cost isn't an issue so much.

Have a look on the justlasik.co.za site, there's a video of a Lasik op. It might not help you get over the fear, but it's interesting to see how they do it, and how quick it is. The video is 3 minutes, and includes the whole procedure.

I have seen it. Thing that bugs me is I have this fear that I will close my eye or something while they doing the thing lol. And yeah I know they clamp your eyelids apart... still :o The day I get over my medical phobia... Ah well maybe one day!

If I could be knocked out completely when they doing it may be a better bet for me rofl.

So today is the big day! I'm going for Lasik surgery at 2pm. Very excited and a little nervous. I better put seatbelts on my eyes, as I'm taking them for the ride of their life! :D

This is what awaits me:

Once you are prepared for your procedure, you will be escorted into the laser theatre for the treatment. You will lie on your back and will be guided to the correct position.

You will see a number of blurry lights directly above you. You should try to keep looking at the green flashing light at all times. It may disappear from time to time but the surgeon will let you know when he is about to do the laser reshaping. This is when it is most important to be looking at the light.

Most people report no pain during the procedure. Some report a feeling of pressure or mild discomfort. Your will hear a buzzing sound during the flap creation, and a clicking sound during the laser reshaping.

At all times avoid trying to squeeze your eyes and try to keep still. Although the laser is cold light, you may be aware of a faint burning smell.

It's not that bad. Remember the worst part is that light is blindingly bright (quite literally :) ), and that for me was the most uncomfortable as you need to convince your brain that it's for the good :)

During the eye tests they shined a ridiculously bright light into my eyes. It felt like the sun came up inside my head. Is this one brighter?

Dude, don't worry, just focus on that red dot when they tell you to ;)

The procedure is really quick, you will be out of there before you can start worrying :D

I think its about the same, the only difference here is you're required to move your eyes as little as possible.

I had this done when I was 18 and it's nothing compared to when you have to have laser surgery to repair a crack in your retina. I went through that schitt and it was hell.

They dilate your pupil to the extent that if you were in the dark you'd probably have to squint, that's how bright ambient light seemed, then they shine this bright ass mofo into your eye...then comes the laser :)

Good luck.
Where are you having it done? Whats the cost?

I want to do mine soon.
Dbn seems to be the cheapest place.
