LATENCY!!!

Same issues here in Rondebosch - thank goodness I'm not alone! A technician is coming round today to check my line, as the operator at Telkom told me the line between my house and the exchange is borked, but your guys' reasoning here seems much more plausable :)

Something happened last night at around 20h00.

Got disconnected for about a minute and Router couldn't sync.

After it re-connected got nice <60ms pings again for the whole night, I am silently hoping they were fixing it at that time.

I am on Crawford exchange, around the rondebosch area.

at 7:30 pm every evening my ping shoots to 120ms from 30ms. At exactly 10:30 my ping drops back to 30ms. At around 9pm, the ping usually hits 200ms.
This problem has been going on for about 8 days now and telkom dont seem to have any idea about it, even though I call them all the time.
The problem seems to be on the 3rd HOP as from my router to the 2nd hop i get 6ms, then the jump is about 120ms extra to the 3rd. This is really ridiculous.

How is that a PROBLEM? My NORMAL ping is 300!

@jpmonster - yep - that's exactly the problem the rest of us seem to be having - 3rd hop (196.43.8.190). Tonight seems a little better though, running at around 70 instead of the usual 35 to Jhb, but it was worse earlier.

@pooky - my sincerest condolences - that is a fate worse than death.

On Mweb 384 and ping in wow skyrockets every time i log in now, tried on telkom account and it was fine. Please help :(

I have just done a speedtest: Durban to Cape town and latency is 363; Durban to New york and 598.

You guys are lucky :)

Telkom has tested and tells me all is fine - it is my ISP. When I spoke about latency the techie did not have a clue

Well that's just wierd. Not sure when it happened but my routing to the IS Crysis server has changed. Now I dont seem to be routing through the infamous 3rd hop (196.43.8.190) that was causing the problem every night for the last few weeks. I'm running through the mweb IP's again but I didnt change my account on my router (mweb.co.za instead of dslmweb.co.za). 14 hops now instead of 10 but still getting a nice 36 ping. Something has happened but it seems to have been by mweb. I suspect the telkom IP problem is still there though - just in hiding.

This week (20-24 Sep) MWeb moved across most of their customers who were on the SAIX network. This means that whatever login you use will still give you the same (MWeb) IP address. This also explains the extra 4 hops.

AFAIK the congestion problem at the 3rd hop is still there. Over this long-weekend (and school holidays) network traffic is low, so it has gone into hiding...

Thanks Gordon_R for that info. With the exception of the usual suspects spikes I've been at my old 37 ping to Jhb for about two days now. So I've been able to play some decent Crysis again (except that I can't use my ping as an excuse anymore- lol). But let's see if it holds when everyone gets back though.

I was about to find my other thread about my carp ping but I think this one will do.

I am in the same boat and am also going give up gaming because of my ping. Between 6pm and 11pm ping shoots up to 150ms + making first person shooters unplayable.

Started about a month or two ago and have since tried everything, nada :(

Same thing here. Used to have a ping of +-20-30ms to local TF2 servers. Nowadays it ranges between 300-600ms. Makes gaming online impossible (esp FPS like TF2). Drives me mad! Tried everything to fix it, nothing helps.

It certainly feels like it everytime I die in-game.

Hi Pooky some feedback for you:

You are connected on an older generation mini DSLAM which is the most likely reason for the latency you're experiencing. I've requested some feedback on what you can expect in terms of when this infrastructure will be upgraded. I'll let you know as soon as I get a response.

Cheers
Will

whats up with mweb today?

Or the internet in general

bytes=32 time=987ms TTL=244
bytes=32 time=1017ms TTL=244
bytes=32 time=944ms TTL=244
bytes=32 time=963ms TTL=244

Thanks, that's great that you found that out, I replied to you in the other thread too.

The couple of good days I had over the weekend now appear to have been just a fluke :(
I'm averaging 150 to IS gaming at the moment - it's supposed to be around 38, and it's been like this for a few days now.

I'm spiking up to 550ms to the UK (BBC) at 6.40pm. (Local isn't great either...)

Edit: Latency is back to normal in the mornngs. My ADSL died last night (Clareinch problems), and I had to have my port reset this morning. (I guess that puts a little latency into perspective...)

Edit: There is a link for problems at the Clareinch exchange last night (30 Sep).

I followed up on this today actually. I have confirmation that There is DSLAM level congestion at Clareinch - I will be making some calls tomorrow to determine what we can expect in terms of getting this resolved as it was my understanding that Clareinch has just gone through an upgrade process.

where can one find out which areas clareinch services... cos im getting 200+ ping now locally and i highly doubt its cos of clareinch since im assuming thats claremont ( a bit too far to run copper imho )

Hey acidrain - I think there is a separate exchange for Plumstead/Wynberg. I'm in Newlands and I've estimated that I'm about 3.5km's away from Clareinch in copper terms (Clareinche is in Lansdowne Road right next to the police station). Use this link to check your distance from the exchange http://fremnet.net/article/216/adsl-theoretical-speed-calculator.

Also, you can find out your exchange by checking your telephone number - found this thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/223337-Do-you-know-your-Telkom-exchange-name/page2
