Latest Telkom ADSL Performance Indicators

About the quoted contention ratio of 20:1:

I assume that is the ratio between me and my chosen ISP (afrihost, gconnect etc), then I have to consider the contention ration of the ISP itself? Or is that figure if you are using telkom internet?

I'd also like to know. Whenever these KPIs are published, there is always discussion and debate as to what they actually mean.

I refer you the previous December article - Telkom DSL Key Performance Indicators, and it discussion - Telkom ADSL KPIs

Are these figures reported by Telkom or by TelkomInternet? Are these KPIs for the the last mile connection (actual physical ADSL line from customer premises to the exchange), or does it go further right till the ISP? If it includes the ISP network, which ISP is this? TelkomInternet I presume?

If the KPIs refer to just the last mile connection, then I see no point in other ISPs reporting on it, as they have no control over the last mile...

Could someone please clarify what all this means in all it's gory technical detail?

It's no using publishing articles and figures like this if nobody knows how to interpret them. Is this the fault of the crappy ADSL regulations?

They should separate business and consumer KPI's, also by period...after hours and business hours, then you will see a totally different picture. Those national average figures are totally worthless.

I'd also like to know what the contention ratio actually applies to.

In spite of a few one-sided interpretations, Telkom is one of the only ADSL service providers making an attempt to fulfill the regulations.

As far as I am aware, Telkom is the ONLY adsl provider in the country, at least until LLU happens. These figures are essentially meaningless.

Ok so can i call this a bad article? Don't publish KPIs and Statistics without at least a conclusion.

And a KPI per definition comes with a "range" , "goal" or "target" . Where is that? What is the TARGET ? Is the KPIs "green" or "red" ?

Nevermind that there's no mention of what the KPI -mean- or how it is determined [hellooo basic research and statistical analysis requirement] , but the most important part of publicizing results like this is to interpret them into something meaningful i.e "scorecarding"

So what does that stats mean ? Is Telkom doing better or worse? Are the values even good to begin with? Is 1.2 jitter good? I don't care if it's "better than last year" if i don't even know if it's even acceptable to have jitter above 1.

These stats are actually between edge routers which means they have absolutely ZERO to do with actual ADSL experience. All the info and definitions of the states are available on the Telkom web site and just like you I'm too lazy to find them and publish them here.

They gather and publish this only because ICASA demands it. They have to release this every year and they have to comply within certain limits or ICASA get 'cross' :)

I never said my reply would be meaningful LOL :)

WHO is paying WHO to "publish" this "article". It is VERY biased. Almost an advertisement.

Is there a online tool to measure KPI? I want to compare my results with Telkom's average.

My ADSL is deteriorating from bad to worse and Telkom says there is no problem with my line.
Slow downloads slow loading of web pages, web pages time out, or do not load properly.
Sometimes is better but on average it is really bad.
E.g my my modem reports noise margins of 11 dB upstream and less than 10 dB downstream.
My neighbour's (on the same exchange) modem reports noise margins of 13 dB upstream and 17 dB downstream.
It is only a 384 kb/s line but it was definitely better in the past.

Really frustrating !!!!

Have you tried testing another modem on your line, and your modem on another line. A lot of the time when Telkom say there is nothing wrong with the line, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE LINE, and it is a modem issue. OK sometimes they get it wrong, but more often than not it's the modem.

Hmmm, you maybe right. I found that if I restart my ADSL router, my internet performance is better for a while. I borrowed another ADSL router but only had it for one day. That was not enough to do extensive tests, or to see any significant improvement. The other ADSL router also reported noise margins in the order 10 - 12 dB, which is not very good.
