Yeah I was looking at that one. I am just concerned about the picture quality over other top brands but think that might be me thinking from years ago...

More importantly:

  • Make sure it's in a dim room (or one that matches your viewing conditions)
  • From the same viewing distance
  • From the same viewing angles
  • That the TVs have been taken off Torch/dynamic mode

Pity there are barely any plasmas left in store to compare with.

Puts things into perspective succinctly, correlates with Tag11's views too.

Also, such a pity that those who think LCD is better will never see this sort of thing. RIP plasma.

I LOVE my plasma so much, I bought her flowers on valentines.

/hugs TV

LCD vs Plasma aside, I need to get a 55" TV by Saturday so that I can give my brother a TV as a housewarming present.

Between the 55h6400 and the 55h6203, which would you go for? Price is R14,999 vs R11,500.

Well the H6400 if you can afford it and it looks way cool. The H6203 is some sort of watered down SA version it seems.

I am still so confused as what TV to go for. I love the bigger is better thought of it but picture quality is also important.

The only worry I have with Plasma is on weekends when we watch during the day, would I have to completely shut all windows and curtains? And Plasma with 3D is quite expensive - still trying to convince the kids that 3D is not needed.

Not necessarily. Plasmas are plenty bright. They're just more reflective than the glossy LCD screens of today. So, if direct light from a window/door falls directly on the TV, you will probably want curtains. Would be the same with any modern LCD as there are no more with matte finishes, although it would not be as bad as plasma.

Kids should be seen and not heard... :p Really though, it's a massive gimmick, and you need to take control.

Yeah I thought as much. The sun comes in from a left angle when looking at the TV so doubt it will be a direct line to the TV. Majority of the time the TV will be viewed from around 6pm so the sun only affects over weekends.

Its easier said than done regarding the 3D - I am sure they will get over it eventually :D

Now to see if I can get that 60" Samsung for around R10k. Is that the best one to go for in my price range or is there not a better one (even if slightly smaller)?

My Samsung 64F8500 Plasma was recently swapped out under warranty for an Ultra HD Curved 65HU8700

Personally I still prefer plasma over LED, but I can't argue with the value they've gifted me on a 15mth old screen! And I'll be smiling when some UHD content comes out.

The painful process I went through dealing with them to get the warranty sorted (6 weeks!) is another matter.

Why, what went wrong with the TV if you don't mind me asking. Could not Samsung fix it or replace it. I got the same TV about the same age. Still going strong. Made in SA. Lots of people from oversees are complaining about faulty panels. Here i don't know any one with this model, that is why I'm curious what went wrong.

There are no more plasmas left, only a Samsung and LG 60".

Unless you want to phone all the retail stores.

These plasmas are worth far more than their selling price. Take advantage of the market being taken advantage of by the LCD lie, in turn lowering demand and price for plasma.

Sounds Great in Woodlands Boulevard had a 64F8500 last month - maybe still do. Give them a call. (Pretoria)
I dealt with Francois, he might remember the name: Mac

It's R9900 from today: http://www.dionwired.co.za/televisions/samsung-50-ultra-hd-led-tv.html

So much for my choice between the two Samsungs. DW has the LG 55 UHD at R15K: http://www.dionwired.co.za/blue-carpet-sale/lg-55-3d-smart-uhd-tv.html

is the 55UB830T any good?

I am in the exact same boat. I see there are quite a few specials at the moment and even this one caught my eye: http://www.dionwired.co.za/blue-carpet-sale/lg-electronic-55inch-full-hd-3d-smart-led-tv.html (it's not 4K tho bt is a good price). Now I am deciding between that LG and the Samsung 50" one as they are similar prices.
