Anyone know anything about the LG 50LF65?
What is it worth and is it good?
I know someone selling it for R7500 brand new

I replaced my old 2011 Samsung with the Hisense 50d which isn't bad actually. Better colours than my old Sammy
 
What's considered a good set nowadays?

My Samsung PS51E550 has served me well for a few years, but it's recently developed a full screen length vertical line of dead pixels. Since I wanted to upgrade to a larger size anyway, now seems like a good time with the upcoming Xmas offers.

I do however want to move away from plasma though. While the quality of the TV is unquestionable, experience has shown the reflective screen is really not suited for my lounge, which is pretty light during the day.

So I'd be looking for a 50-60" LED I guess. Any advice?

The biggest and highest range you can afford.

Remember that LCD screens are glossy too nowadays, though less so than plasma.

Why not get the PA60H5000 60" FHD plasma at less than R10,000 and invest in some curtains with the balance?

LOL. I have pretty thick curtains - unfortunately ANY light that seeps in shows up on the surface, it's just that glossy.

Out of interest - where is that model available for less than 10k?
 
Although 40 inch is seen as entry level 50 is the actual entry level size. 32 inch for those spare sets you need in the rooms.
 
Would a UHD TV not end up upscaling any 720p / 1080p content? (ie. pretty much anything you watch since there's hardly any 4K content out there)

Would that not end up looking worse than a 1080p display?

Netflix has a few shows in 4k already and it will only increase as they produce their own content. Also 4k upscaling generally won't make your picture look worse. At the very least it will smoothen the picture or make it look better.
 
Please can someone explain what the white rectangle thing is in the image? I have seen it in other images too. Also by the looks of it, 1/3 (almost) is speakers or something...
