even though plasma handles motion far better and has lower response time and is generally a better
You cant automatically assume that, people buy complete TVs not just panel technology, and a good panel can't make up for shaky digital hardware/firmware.

Case in point, 1st pro review of 2012 5 series plasma, not exactly stellar motion performance according to them ...

Odd one in the basket then that, considering entry plasmas are usually excellent compared to their LCD counterparts. My thoughts are echoed in the motion test bit, as well as the comments.

Easy to nitpick examples to suit our opinions.

You miss the point.

I'm disagreeing with you notion that just because it's a plasma, its motion handling must automatically be good. Truth of the matter is these days motion handling has more to do with the digital hw/sw side of the TV rather than the panel.

Far smarter to check out the actual motion capabilities of specific models rather then simply assuming panel technology will assure it.

We’ve found through repeated testing that plasma TVs tend to test with better motion performance than LCDs.

That's fine, but you should then take it up with Television Info themselves. Of course it was a general notion, and you obviously misinterpreted it. :p

What's there to misinterpret about this ...

For a plasma, we were disappointed with how the E530A3 handles motion. It’s blurry and has no motion smoothing settings. If you’re looking for a good sports TV, steer clear of this one.

Only misinterpretation I see is your regular insistance that plasma assures good motion handling.

Because it usually does. Who's going to deny this? That it tends to be better. It's often the case with entry plasmas, hence TVI were surprised and disappointed.

I've said plenty of times there are good and bad plasmas and LCDs, carry on nitpicking though, as long as it's as fun for you as it is for me.

Must have missed those, what plasmas have you specifically identified as bad in previous posts on this forum?

I haven't had much bad experience with modern plasma, worse experiences with LCDs because they are in greater abundance and tend to be lesser than plasma at aspects I appreciate like sport/motion handling, black levels/lighting consistency, and SD performance. One also cannot deny that sometimes our sports channel sources are poor, plasma is the lesser of two evils in my experience (i.e. close-up faces blurring and fast ball trails). I don't need to have listed models in order to know that there are some bad plasmas, sorry if that's not in line with your strawman...

Geez the 2 of you need a room... with a TV!!:p

Anyway, what would be the best way to determine Hz ratio to CMR?
Divide CMR in half for true Hz rating?

That seems to be the current situation, however there is no guarantee it will continue this way.

All these new motion ratings are based on the manufacturer's opinion of what the effective perceivable frame rate & motion clarify of a particular model is, irrespective of what (& how many) underlying technical mechanisms are used to achieve them. So there isn't even a guarantee that different manufacturer's ratings are even related.

Not that the previous system of quoting the DSP's frame rate was a reliable indicator either, the motion handling/clarity of a Samsung & HyFong 100Hz would usually not produce an equal quality result.

Problem is, how would you really know if the set IS 100Hz, except for "trusting" the website and media?

No substitute for doing it the proper way, go evaluate them first hand.

I assume you don't buy a car without first test driving it yourself (and a couple of comparable ones).
