LA40D503 is same FHD LCD panel as the D550 (SQ01)...just stripped down i.e. less HDMI & USB ports. R2999 is a good price.

Hi all

Need some advice

In the market for a new tv.
budget R7000
either LED or Plasma (not sure which to get)
40 inch or bigger but don't want anything larger than 46 inch
must have media player
for watching movies/series and gaming mostly

Please provide me with some wisdom!

My two consideration would be:

Samsung LA46D550
LG 47LK530

Both are however LCD and not LED LCD.

Both are R5999 at Makro. So left with R1000 to buy blueray player :D

My 2 cents

That would depend on what you'll be viewing (sport, movies, bluray, sd etc), your distance from the screen, lighting in room, connectivity requirements, 3D or not and such. Personally, for R7k I'd go for a Panasonic TH-P42U30Q.

Viewing distance?

If you up budget to R8-9k you can get 51" FHD 3D plasma.

Sorry to hijack the hijacked hijack here :):)) but I'm in the market for an upgrade too and was looking for some advice. Looking at the 47-51" range, 100% of viewing will be from an HTPC over HDMI. Don't need built in media players or USB slots or 3D - just picture quality and full HD resolution. I've been out of the TV market for several years after buying my current 40" Samsung (seems like back in 'Nam!) so I'm not sure what's what when it comes to LCD, LED and Plasma these days. I was under the impression LED was a waste of cash and Plasma was to be avoided unless you watched a lot of normal SD TV and because of burn-in (is that still an issue?) - but after reading a bit of this thread, I'm open to advice as I'm clearly misinformed!

And recommendations under 10k? Bonus points if they're on special anywhere at the moment too :) Thanks!

I'm guessing that'll be the E series TVs. Available in most stores already though.

That wouldn't be true 100Hz, you're probably referring to 100 CMR, which some abuse further by adding in a Hz at the end. Cheapest Sammy 40" 100Hz is usually R8k+ and starts at 6 Series (nice Dion Wired special with the UA40D6000 for R6k).

My wife and son went off to buy the Samsung 43" E450 today for 5k and came back with a UA40ES6200R for 10k.

Any comments on this tv? I love the SMART tv with wifi and all the rest, but I won't see it until I get back to SA in August and would like to know is it twice the tv for twice the price?

Also, where is the best place to buy more active 3d glasses? They seem like they cost a fortune :wtf:

I'm working away these days so she had no choice after the old one stopped working recently. It was probably my son twisting her arm to get the fancy job but it seems like she got a decent tv. At least it wasn't a pair of shoes ffs :D

It was probably your son and the salesman ;)

Edit: that could come across wrong: I meant with the commission aspect.
