Thank you... that is exactly the same as my current setup too (except I have my HD PVR set to 720p instead of 1080i... cannot see a difference between the two)

And from your perspective, the SD channels viewed via the HD PVR are more than acceptable on this screen?

Thanks... that pretty much confirms that SD footage is handled pretty well by this lower-end Samsung model.

I had a salesman (not your typical dumb salesman, but a very experienced and knowledgeable guy) give me an analogy between the 64E8000 and the 60E550: An M5 versus a 3-series BMW. Both do the job, but the E8000 is in a different class in terms of processing power and features. He acknowledged that the E550 is an absolute bargain for what you're getting, but the E8000 is worth the extra cash. It's making me more confused than ever!

Does the E550 not have any of the SmartTV features at all?

It is a SMART TV - "Smart TV with SKYPE®, web browsing, apps and more".

For SD channels there wont be any perceivable difference between 720p (upscaled to 1080p) & 1080i de-interlaced to 1080p, due to the poor quality/resolution of the source.

You only notice it with the HD channels, but this is also dependant on a few factors; eyesight, viewing distance, quality of source material & correct calibration of the TV settings.

I certainly notice the HD difference on my 46" TV at 2.5m, especially with the best grade signals e.g. locally shot sport specifically in-studio scenes, the upscaled 720p looks softer. Best way to describe it is like looking through a camera lens that 90% focused, then turning it that last 10% to optimal focus. The picture gets that extra sharpness, crispness & depth.

Since the HDPVR is not able to switch HDMI output on the fly, I prefer to keep it on the setting that provides me the best HD & SD output, namely 1080i.

Should be, but again depends greatly on the quality of the channel/content. The non wide-screen ones will always be worse as there will need to be horizontal scaled to fill the screen (wouldn't use 4:3 pillar box output on a plasma).

Only SD channel I watch quite a bit of is BBC News and since its wide-screen it looks pretty decent on my TV off a HDPVR in 1080i output.

For a "very experienced and knowledgeable salesman", he did not give a very good explanation, it seems...

Dunno if this was mentioned, but House & Home have a few items for sale this week. I picked up a Samsung 46EH6030 for R8,799 and they have the 46ES6200 (incl Smart features and BD-player) for R10,899

Anyone got any opinions on the UA46EH5300 vs the 46EH6030?

They're quite closely priced, both seem to be 3D LEDs, 3 vs 2 hdmi ports (not an issue), 2 vs 1 usb ports. Anyone more informed about these?

EH5300 is not 3D. EH6030 is better, being a 6 Series.

What about PS51E550 51" FHD 3D SMART plasma? +-R9k.

As has been mentioned EH5300 not 3D, but also EH6030 not Smart. Biggest diffs though is motion processing, EH5300 = 100CMR & EH6030=200CMR (real 100Hz engine).

I have found that my need for a new telly is directly proportional to the number of times I open this thread.

Hi, joined so I could ask this forum. I've been doing some research and I've narrowed the choices down to a Samsung PS51E550 which is going for R8999 at Makro at the moment or a Samsung UA40ES6200 (I might put in a bit extra for the 46" 6200). I really like the E550 though and it seems to be a good price but I am a bit worried about the reflection. Are there any advantages for one set over the other?

Well unless you have a very small room i.e. watch from ~2m, its hard to argue with the value proposition of a 51" for R9K, but the E550 does have some caveats;

Its not a great performer in bright lighting conditions e.g. indirect sunlight. The panel is quite reflective, not that bright and not pitch black in colour, so contrast will suffer in these conditions. The ES6200 with its brighter, semi-matt panel would be more ideal.

Motion handling is also not top-notch on the E550 with poor quality content (esp in HD sport), being equivalent to cheaper 50Hz LCDs, but without the blur. The 400CMR motion processing on the ES6200 will be a lot smoother for poor content (low frame rate, poor rate conversions).

On the plus side the E550 looks great in dim lighting condition with cinematic type content, especially in dark scenes where LEDs like the ES6200 tend to crush blacks (little shadow detail).

Best is to go check them out for yourself at a store that has DSTV (HD) and Bluray connected to them.

I have got a 50" Panasonic Plasma display which is not being used. It has composite, component, VGA and HDMI inputs, 8 watt stereo amps. No tuner. Only has a wall mount bracket as was used in a shop for 3 years. Tried an ad on here and nobody replied. Shop needs about R 4800 for it. It is model TH-50PHD8WS. Maximum resolution is 1200 x 1600. Works on blu-ray but on 1080i

R4800?! Yeah that's a bit much for that.

Thanks Roman 4604. The motion handling is an issue for me as I like to game, and I'm worried that the ES50 won't be able to handle it. I'm moving into a new place in a few weeks so I don't actually know what the lighting situation is going to be like in the flat. The 6200 is sounding pretty good.
