Makro has the LG 55LM5800 on special for R17k. Good deal or not?

Edit: Only in Bloem, grand opening. :-(

Can someone tell me why LG uses active 3D on their plasmas and not passive like on their LCD/LED?

PN = North America
PS = Southern Hemisphere
PE = Europe

etc. Along those lines. Sometimes there are minor spec differences (which makes it very confusing!).

Samsung 42/43" plasmas have always been epic, would love to upgrade my HD Ready PS42C450 to a FHD version.

Would take a bit of sacrificing SD quality which is still important to me, mind you.

I have the same. Epic is a good description. I would only replace it with an FHD version or perhaps a passive LG 3D - but the latter only because I like gimmicks :)

I believe this may be spot on:

The passive film retarder technology is not well suited to plasma panels due to the lower brightness levels of a plasma display (3D viewing decreases brightness) and the substantial increased cost of the display vs. active systems which only add nominally to the material cost.

The Samsung PS51E550 is today advertised on a flier in Beeld by NewWorld Discount Stores in the Menlyn Retail Park Mall for R9599 and the PS 60E550 for R18 890.

The prices quoted on the flier differ from those on the website.

Hi guys,

need some help. A friend of mine is looking to get a new TV. (Already have a HD PVR)
Her budget is R6k max. She is not worried about 3D or Smart TV features at all. Will mainly watch whatever is on Dstv, movies / series via USB, etc. She is just looking to get a quality TV with good PQ.
Room is well-lit, but she will primarily watch TV in the evenings.
Watching distance is about 2,5-3,5m.
Space won't allow more than 42". SO anything bigger is a problem anyway excluding the budget constraint.

She prefers a sammy, but any good suggestions will do.

Thanks in advance.

Hi peeps

My 32" inch sammy is up for replacement. Its just not cutting the mustard in my new lounge. I sit about 3.5 to 4 metres away from TV. I would like to get a 47" for under 6k-7K. I saw Makro had an LG that fits this budget, but wondering if you guys have any thoughts or recommendations ?

Samsung PS43E450 43" HD Ready plasma
Samsung UA40EH5000 40" Full HD LCD.

The LCD is higher res but the plasma, with its lower res, will give the best picture quality. Especially when it comes to SD, which I'm sure your friend is likely to watch. Many of the girly channels are SD.

Samsung PS51E450 51" HD Ready plasma.

sorry, i should have added a couple other points. The main use for this TV will be to play games (XBOX and PS3). Is there any conclusive reason for either LCD or PLASMA for gaming? I have heard that Plasma is better for sports, so wondering if similar logic applies for console games.

I am leaning towards LCD/LED to avoid plasma burn from gaming HUDS/GUIS. is that still an issue these days ?

Main difference would be smaller FHD LCD (46/47") vs larger HD Ready plasma (51"). Since you're sitting far back, larger size would generally be more favourable, even though most PS3/Xbox games are 720p/HD Ready (very few, perhaps 1%, are 1080p/FHD). Depends if you hold higher resolution (undetectable from far viewing distances) above screen size.

At 60Hz, plasma has lower input lag and better motion handling. But I've never had a problem with modern LCDs and console/PC gaming.

Nope, not an issue.

I would take your console(s) and test 46/7" LCD vs 51" plasma. Try to avoid brighty-lit showroom floors, as it becomes a judgement of brightness opposed to picture quality. At home, under the right conditions (dimmer-lit room, evening viewing etc.) entry plasma will whip entry LCD.

Farking awesome gaming on a plasma. Prefer PS3 on my Plasma over LCD (both entry level), the Plasma handles everything much more fluidly than the LCD. No issue with HUDs, if there is any IR, just scroll or switch to another channel after you have finished gaming. Wipes it clean again.

Agree - better contrasts too. Much better to game on a plasma provided the room is dimmer.
