Yes, they are watching non stop.

I'm also impressed with it, I have a 51d550 and I'm not sure if the extra money for the full hd is really worth it.

At sizes above 43" yes 1080p is better then 720p.

Not true, depends on viewing distance. At 3-4m+ most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference with 50". Most TV rooms I've seen in SA have longer viewing distances than 3-4m as well. Most people seem to sit outside the range where 1080p can be fully appreciated. So for many people, 1080p is indeed a gimmick.

Really depends on the source material being watched.

For instance am watching a soccer match in HD (1080i DSTV) on a 51" 1080p TV, and can still identify individual players in wide field shots at 3m viewing distance. On a 51" only capable of displaying 1024x768 pixels, players would just look like a pixelated mush and will not be clearly identifiable.

Just to throw in my 50 cents on this whole 720p vs 1080p things under the incorrect viewing conditions.

Over and over again people don't even know nor care to understand the difference. Largely a sales gimmick to make you spend some more money to appreciate what your untrained eye cannot see. I'll stick with my "full hd" plasma tv until someone calls me on when I tell them it's full hd, and they all nod their stupid heads in agreement.

Looking to buy the Samsung UA40ES6200 - was R7499 at Game. Only have space for a 40" and would prefer a Sony (Everything else is Sony in my setup (Surround System, Blu-Ray (BDP-S470).

Any thoughts on that Samsung and an equivalent Sony?

BTW - My BR says 3D capable on software upgrade (when I bought it). Done a few upgrades since then but not sure if it is now 3D capable. Any way to check this?

True but those people would not visit this forum (section).

Typical response from an HDR TV owner. I suspect you have little day to day experience watching FHD i.e. 1080i/p on a 1080p display.

What's true is that it makes up of the majority of people buying TVs, especially if they sit more than 2-2.5m+ from 40" and 3-4m+ from 50".

Or they just sit outside the range described above, at which the majority of people, including people visiting this forum, cannot tell the difference.

I must agree with Roman4604 here. When it comes to 51" from 3 metres away you can instantly see the difference in pixel size between HD and FullHD, even when viewing an SD dstv broadcast. Full HD definitely looks better even upscaled.

What about further than 3m, for most people (besides ourselves)?

Where are you getting your further than 3m for most?

Most people, regardless of their house or what they own, can't tell the difference from 2-2.5m+ from 40" and 3-4m+ from 50". Most middle-upper class South African homes I've been to have viewing distances longer than 3-4m. Houses are generally a bit bigger than in the States I reckon where it's more about apartments etc.

That 51" HDR plasma must be the deal of the year.

Guys looking to get around 40-46" LCD. What's the best for around 5-7k at the moment? Don't need 3d or smart tv.

But these people aren't limited to HDR price points and are likely to have DSTV Premium with an HDPVR. Mid to high end 1080p TVs > 46" are far better suited to their needs and budgets.

I disagree, all I see around me is gizillions of Summercon type complexes going up with limited floor space. Even on the higher end (2-5mil) most are compact-cluster gated complexes.

My guess would be our average is slightly less than 2.7m, and at these distances 1024x768 pixels stretched to 51" is far from ideal (if picture fidelity matters for you).

In this case budget would be around R5k as the 51" HDR plasma is R4,999.

At distance, picture quality > picture fidelity. Because at a point, fidelity won't matter due to being outside the perceivable range of 1080p. For these people, 1080p is very much a marketing gimmick, and picture quality will do them better.

Even PSxxE450 competes well against ES6200 LCD.

And who are these people?

So most E550/E8000 owners (I'l leave out the LCD/LED owners to make it simple) sit further than 3m away and are thus suckers for spending more than what a HDR costs?
