LCD and Plasma Bargains and Discussions thread

See what I mean?

There is simply nothing in this world that convince some people. Sad really ...

I bought the PS43D452 over the weekend. It is up and running now and I am happy with it. Haven't even adjusted any settings, just went with the default home setup settings it came with.

Asked the salesman what the difference is between the 450 and the 452 - he seemed knowledgeable but couldn't answer that either.

Was worried that the plasma is going to be too reflective, but I am so used to the CRT that anything is an improvement.

You can check the difference at Samsung's website, http://www.samsung.com/africa_en/co...compare?prda=PS43D452A5XXA&prdb=PS43D450A2XXA

After a quick look it seems that the 452 has a caption/subtitle function, which the 450 does not have.

Where did you buy and what cost?

What do you guys think of the 40" Sony (kdl40cx520 ) that audiovision has on special for R4499?

No idea how good this tv is, but Pick and Pay hyper has it for R4000.

See if they pricematch. Save you a bit of hassle.

Agreed. AFAIK part of CPA dictates they should.

Ta and ta - will check tomorrow.

Don't know if the CPA covers specials though. Also have also had Dion Wired check competitor stock levels first before meeting price so will depend if Hyper has stock - gonna call first thing

Gotta love MyBB forumites - on the ball as always

PS: Just noticed .avi's don't play natively - .mp4's are fine, hmm

Still, have not seen a 40" anywhere else near the same price...what to do, what to do...

Whether the D550 plasma is just a bad example, I'm not sure - but certainly not great.

Even my 2 year LCD has better a black level the D550 plasma. I went through to Dions Wired Woodmead and the one they had was grey as well. It was actually horrible compared to the LED next to it that had real blacks!

I have got a two year old B650 and when XBMC turns it black, it's black, actually causing me to leave the tv on quite a bit of the time. my Sony LCD, and my brothers LCD doesnt actually compare.

No idea about the D550 though...

To close the loop on the Sony - no one has stock - closest Hyper comes is the Sammy 40" for the same price as the Sony.

The Sammy definitely plays .avi's and would have been my pick... If it's the LA40D550. The lesser D503 (or similar) with 1 x HDMI has no HD media player, in which case the Sony is better.

Yep - it's the lesser one (D503) - been wanting to get an AC Ryan anyway so this is a perfect excuse :)

When we viewed the Samsung PS51D550 in a darkened room, we could tell that the darkness of its blacks wasn’t up to the market-leading standards of the Panasonic Plasma TVs, although we weren’t really troubled by the image on offer. In other words, the black level quality was adequate, although not class-leading. Imagine our delight when we used our Klein K-10 meter to get the hard data on the PS51D550′s black level quality, and found that it performed almost identically to Samsung’s top-end Plasma TV for 2011, the D8000

Erk - quite poor then!

If you're going to quote from the site, at least read the whole article. You must have missed where they gave the PS51D550 a "Highly recommended" 4.5/5. At 60Hz, which is used for the media player and console gaming- Black levels are 0.057.

As for gaming on the 51D550, the input lag for gaming from console or PC can be configured to only16ms. The best from Samsung LED's as tested by the site you mentioned I quote are 33ms from the top of the range 55D8000 LED, 33ms from the 46D7000 LED and 46ms from the 40D6530 LED. None of which managed to score a 4.5/5 like the 51D550 Plasma.

The same review also says regarding Plasma vs LCD:

"We feel that any lingering greyness in the blacks put out by a Plasma television draw less attention to themselves than on LCDs, due to the fact that the darkness is more consistent across the entire screen. With LCD, the blacks almost always appear brighter at some screen locations, especially near the edges, and they change depending on the viewer’s sitting location."

Then to conclude:

"It’s a winner. After upgrading the firmware to eradicate the rogue noise reduction system, we were absolutely delighted with the detail, clarity, texture, and overall image put out by this affordable big-screen Plasma TV. It can also deliver a remarkably speedy gaming experience. While it’s not without flaws, we think that given these strengths and a bargain price tag, the Samsung PS51D550 deserves a “Highly Recommend" rating.

After your propaganda:whistle: people should see what the reviewers really had to say. :)

Lmao!

"Bias!"

"You're an owner defending your purchase!"

"My B650 6 Series R22,000 2 year 40" LCD has better peak black levels!"

"The blacks aren't black!"
