The LA46D550 has been seen as low as R5,999. I would weigh up whether LED backlighting is worth the premium. Otherwise R6,999 is a good price for entry Samsung 46" LED backlit LCD, and will suit your PC work (Google Samsung PC Mode) and gaming very well. SD DSTV will be disappointing.
 
Has anybody been able to get any info on that 51" Sammy plasma from House and Home for R5k?

Yes, it's not on at any other branches I've phoned, and probably wasn't the Full HD model (PS51D550), but the HD Ready model (PS51D450). Doesn't make sense for a R9k TV to suddenly drop R3k. Too good to be true unfortunately.

Haha. Well if i can get 2 grand for my lcd, it's only a 5 grand tv. I've been saving for a led 40/42 inch upgrade for awhile now but i thought i would be willing to work some more for a 46 inch.

What's the difference between the 46D550 and 46EH5000? I love the led backlighting for blu-rays and gaming.

LA46D550 is CCFL backlit LCD with a matte screen, 60Hz, cosmetically inferior with a thicker bezel. Media playback via USB and DLNA, with the option of wireless. 4 x HDMI ports.

UA46EH5000 is LED edge lit LCD with a glossy screen, 60Hz and 100 CMR advertised as improving motion, cosmetically superior with thinner bezel and newer design. Media playback via USB, 2 x HDMI ports.

The UA46EH5000 seems to be less deep in dimension than the LA46D550 (taller & wider) which is strange. It's recommended you test the TVs of your choice in a non bright store, but rather dim environment/test room before making your purchase, assuming you will at times and perhaps most often use the TV at night in low ambient light conditions. You also need to take it out of Store mode/Dynamic contrast mode which all TVs are set to on the showroom floor to stand out to buyers. Store mode AKA Torch mode pumps contrast and backlight brightness resulting in overly bright contrasty colours with all finer details washed out, far from picture quality. By all means if you will be using the TV under bright conditions and mainly in the day, you wouldn't need to worry about testing in a dim environment and inconsistent blacks.

Both will suit you well I'm quite sure. Just be advised not to buy what you think looks best at Game or Makro etc. since the viewing conditions and TV settings are flawed (unless your TV room is as bright as a Game/Makro).

Your other options for better PQ are smaller, higher end LCD, or plasma. You mentioned Blu-rays, basically the settings you find on TVs in Game/Makro are not what you want for best picture quality and full detail in Blu-rays, especially. Picture quality involves lowering the backlight and brightness and contrast (slightly) to improve black levels, black consistency and overall contrast ratio (difference between bright whites and deep blacks). The settings at Game/Makro/showroom pump brightness and contrast which washes out all these finer details. Of course, no layman buying TVs or getting advice from salesmen would understand this, and would automatically go for what looks brightest and punchiest.

What sort of lighting conditions does your TV room have when you will be using the TV most? Viewing distance?

Same dilemma here: I'm in between those 2 Samsung ones.

Viewing conditions: wall-mounted, white walls, 2.8/3m viewing distance & mostly to be used at nightime for sports/movies. Would also be keen to plug a media player to it to watch Divx, or streaming.

Viewing distance is about 2m when watching tv, series, etc.

Have a two halogen bulb main light on the roof, cream walls, one light angled to back of room and one angled over desk where I sit to work on my pc. Also,have a 1.5m tall standing lamp, 1m to the left of the screen.

When i work on the screen for my pc, i use both lights. When i watch series, etc... I mostly use the side lamp. Use the screen throughout the day and night.

2012 EH models are backlit, its the ES models that are slim & edge-lit.

Seems Samsung just switched CCFL for LED in their budget to mid range without altering the design much, the EH LEDs are actually thicker than the 2011 D LCDs.

Game have the 40" 550 (lcd) for R4499 Samsung, any one know of a better deal than this ??
 
I see that Audiovision is selling the PS51D450 for R6500, much cheaper than H&H

Ah, thanks for the correction re EH and ES, I'll pay closer attention next time.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly (meant deeper in earlier post, not less deep), hopefully having it thicker means less light bleed/spots.
