Just remember - You are charged VAT and 20% duty on 110% of the value of the TV. So looking at almost R9000 tax/duty before you take the shipping price into consideration.

Hi Guys,
Just a quick q - I went to look at the Tvs at Foto Catz today. I saw a plasma and LCD next to each other (Samsung).
Now I know that all the facts online seem to claim that Plasma has better blacks than the LCD equivalent, but that's not what I saw.
The plasma's blacks clearly looked 'grey' compared to the LCD.
Have I got my facts wrong somewhere, as I was convinced that Plasma offered the deeper black levels?

Well it depends, some models of Plasmas provide unbeatable black levels e.g. high-end Panasonic NeoPlasmas. But they can only do this under their ideal conditions, which are dark or dimly lit environments where the cell brightness can be set to optimal levels.
In well lit environments like stores, they generally gun the cell brightness to max (to maintain contrast parity with LCDs/LEDs next to them) leading to less than the best blacks. LCDs/LEDs on the other hand can maintain good contrast with their back/edge lights at moderate levels even in well lit stores. Also LEDs employ dimming (global on low to mid, local on high end), meaning the processor is constantly altering back/edge light bightness depending on whats on the screen, leading to an improved perception of blacks.

You can't compare a general fact (plasma has best blacks) to a comparison of two specific models (which you haven't mentioned). Not all plasmas have better blacks; a higher end LCD could very well have better blacks than an entry plasma. Generally at the same price point, plasma will have better blacks. Also I guess it's the bright lighting in the store/incorrect TV settings which made the LCD appear better. Compare in a test room similar to that of your viewing room (lighting, distance), fiddle with settings, and then decide. If you have a brightly lit room/lots of direct sunlight, get LCD.
Thanks. not much of a saving then considering the warranty issues etc. maybe i will just wait for next years models then and see whats on offer. maybe 3d without glasses? toshiba wants to sell there 55" version at $11000.00

It actually depends on the plasma TV, some of the lower end plasma's black levels do not beat mid to higher end LCD's, they also have a form of pixelization due to a low dpi in comparison to the LCD's but hey apparently I'm biased when I point out that not all plasma's have superior blacks or colours.

You wouldn't be biased, you'd just have misunderstood a general fact about a technology, vs comparing specific TVs. Plasmas do generally have better blacks, it's a fact, this usually goes along with comparing at the same price point. It certainly does not mean the cheapest plasma would beat the most expensive LCD...
Not sure what "plasmas also have a form of pixellation..." has to do with anything? You get HD Ready LCDs as well you know.

Interested in the Sammy but also looking at LG 47' 3D not the smart TV (LG47LW450 I think) .... U perhaps stock and if so can u confirm price and assist in making a comparison pls .... Sammy is active right n believe it's better but not too keen on the active 3D based on the flicker on the shades alone .... While the passive LG is all too easy on the eyes. HELP I'm so undecided ..... Really also want everyone to enjoy the 3D .... But is LG's 2D - 3D conversion gonna do the trick barring actual 3D content .... Lastly really also buying it for gaming ....

Hey, sorry I don't know much about 3D nor LG, maybe Roman can help, only that Samsung wins generally when I've compared non 3D (due to Samsung's PVA LCD panels compared to LG's IPS panels - Google it) . Personally I would go with the biggest screen possible as that will dictate how good my gaming experience would be. PS51D550 wins in this regard (and it's known to be excellent overall with good 2D - 3D conversion). But you won't want it for a bright room with lots of direct sunlight. Only then would I consider LCD.

There was an ad on TV for fotocats last night, and they were advertising a 40inch Samsung D5000 LED for R5999 I think?
That seams about fair, and its a pretty good little TV too

LA32D550 does that via USB and portable storage. Not sure if the Sony plays mkv's.

I think Sony sucks in that regard. So far, there's nothing I have thrown at my Samsung PS51d450 that it can't play on its own. Holding out on buying a separate media player as the only benefit would be having some kind of bookmark system to remember where i have watched various media up to.

Had a media player before I bought my PS51D450 but haven't used it since. Although I do miss the bookmarking facility and would also like to be able to copy between different drives connected to the panel.

I think i saw one for 5699 at Hirschs, or could have been 7699 for the 46". But try them in any case.
