Are there any LCD/Plasmas that are decent/modern and don't have a tv tuner?

Yes. And quite a bit more than their similar TV counterparts.

Any issue with the 40" Samsung (LA40C530) at Game for R6999.00

A friend wants to buy it and is asking me for recommedations - I don't own a TV, so don't really know if this is a good deal or not - seems like it though for a 40".
Though personally, I'd be more keen on the 50" Samsung Plasma (PS50C430) for R8999.00- his budget is R10k.

I bought that exact one from Game a few weeks ago. I'm more than happy with it so far. Excellent for HD/FHD video and PS3 gaming. It also has a very good built in media player. I think House & Home have it for R6799 or something so use that to get it slightly cheaper at Game.

However, if your friend needs a TV for mainly SD TV (especially sports) then rather go for a Plasma.

Depends what the TV is going to be used for?

And I've seen the 50C430 floating around the R7999 mark.

Mostly TV, movies, blu-ray, but also with the occasional laptop usage.

I tested that set and was not happy, though you might want to chat to MartyMarts, as he bought one and is happy with it.

Which set are you on about merc? The Samsung LCD?

Thanks merc and MartyMarts.

PmP - where've you seen that panel for R7999?
Not finding anything on PriceCheck.
Will keep looking though.

Yeah - that's the same price as Game :)
I was asking about the 50" plasma that PostmanPot mentioned he saw floating around for R7999.00

Was a week or 2 ago so special is probably over. Think it was Makro. Plasma hd ready will be best for tv/sport but you'd want full hd for connecting to pc probably in which case the LCD wins. Just remember though that that LCD along with other mid range LCDs are shyte for tv/sport. So probably comes down to how much of a priority tv/sport is.

They should go and test both sets out.

The plasma is really good though. Best response time, depth of blacks, best colours.

I think that plasma is R9000, as it is the HD Ready version. The Full HD one is going for R12000.
Ok, thanks.
I've always just wondered how much of a diffrence 720p is to 1080p and from what I've read - not much.

I'm just being homophobic here, but my friend is gay and I don't think sport is a priority for him :p :)
The depth of the colours is what does it for me about plasma at the larger screen size though.
I have been telling him that he should go in and compare the two side by side and go with his gut, wrt to which feels best for him and his eye.

Thanks for all of the input okes.

This thread is pure win :D

Nope, next down is 40". It's a good TV but it really depends on what you're wanting to use it for.

Thanks but all of those a bit over budget for me at this point. You don't need a tv license for a decoder do you? Just connect via composite, component or hdmi?

Why don't you just get a plasma with a TV tuner then? They are way cheaper. 42" = R5700, 50" = R7500ish, 50" FHD = R12,000ish.
