Easy just did it, forced PS3 to 720p and watched the same Blueray.

Even from 2m+ away on a 40' the difference is fidelty is easily noticable. The texture of surfaces is so much more detailed especially on close ups.

For example in a headshot scene in HD you can see any general imperfections on someones skin, in Full HD you can see the individual hair folicals on an unshaven face very clearly.

Thanks for the input. This is something that I'm particularly interested in. I really think your eyesight plays a role. Remember those tests you need to do when you do your Learner's Licence test. Now I reckon that those who score higher would be able to more easily see the differences between 720p and 1080p on a 40inch+ at 2m+, while some may even be able to see the difference on a 32inch at 2m.

Thats what I used to claim and were many times shot down by the Internet pseudo scientists and video experts that claim the difference and state that the HD ready displays are good enough as you would not see a difference at 3Meter+. Playing a 720p v 1080p video trailer and them pause both at the exact same spot at a detail point like a face or detailed object clearly shows the difference. If you think you will not notice it at normal playing speed or viewing distance then you fool yourself as your brain still perceive the one better than the other due to the detailed depth and color presentation. The 1080p generally seems sharper and more defined.

I always ask them then, if that is the case then use a 1080p+ LCD for PC and super GPU cards and why the issue running Crysis at super resolution, I always get such contrasting and unique arguments it's a laugh. Normally they will then refer you to the Internet bible that has an article that gives viewing distance required for specific screen size. Now I remember my late grandma used to sit closer to the TV so she can see better, that confirms my argument that you may sit where it pleases you most, there is no specific required viewing distance.

Lol, relax. All the "experts" mention that the difference is noticeable with stills. Also I'm not sure I'm not quite following your argument about [PC] games? Again, none of the experts deny the difference is not noticeable with games. To get the full benifit of full HD, there is definitely a required viewing distance.

PP... the difference is noticeable with moving pictures as well.....

Could you be more specific? Under certain conditions like >50"? Ok. <2m? Ok.

Interesting how someone on this forum like TYR ("president" according to other "expert" Dolby) says he only noticed a difference in stills. Remember, size and viewing distance. Both those guys have way more experience than all of us combined! And I'm quite sure TYR would be able to correct any vision impairments he might have. Again, I'm not doubting the difference, just saying whose opinion I'd be more likely to trust...

On my old 42" from about 2.5m it was noticeable in both still and moving pictures.

It is obviously dependant on the material being used, but mine was incredibly detailed nature documentaries, and of course it is very much down to how good a persons eye-sight is and I have fairly good eyesight, without the need for any corrections to make it "normal" or "good"

The American equivalent of these models are for example the PN42C450 going for an incredible $578 at the moment: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-PN42C450-42-Inch-Plasma-Black/dp/tech-data/B0036WT3V6/ref=de_a_smtd

This means with currency conversion we are looking at R4000! However these prices would not drop in our local market before the B line has been sold.

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA - do not even BOTHER to do currency conversions. SA has a huge 30% import tax, plus is a much smaller market so it's more a case of making larger profits off smaller volumes than smaller profits off huge volumes.

Picked up a D450 43" for R5,600 for the bedroom - stunning. 59" D550 with 3d for the living room coming as soon as they're available - next week or so. Shame we pay out of our butt cheeks for tv's - can get a far bigger screen and better model in the US for the same price - making comparisons will just completely piss you off.

What is the 59" going for....?

Bad news for guys waiting for the D series 3D plasmas. I was told today at the Samsung Store at Canal Walk that the D series 3D Plasma TVs do not include any 3D glasses as part of the price. Previous gen and the LG 3D TVs include glasses so that sucks.

Entry level 3D glasses for the D series are R999.

I wish! No, the new glasses are bluetooth and are battery operated. They also only work with D series Samsung TVs.

Hmmm... that makes the 3D option of the D490 quite a lot more expensive than the D450...

Non 3D
43D450 - R6000

3D
43D490 - R7000 + R2000 (for 2 x glasses) = R9000
