I saw it on their website last week under the weekly leaflets. It's been taken off since then but it may be worth your while to call and check if that special is still on.

Only reason is that I'd shoot myself if I buy the 42inch HD ready and then few months later miraculously another 42inch fhd pops up somewhere... But honestly I just cant convince myself to buy a hd ready when I know I should get a FHD... But you know, another reason why Im so scared of the bigger screens (apart from the fact that the wife doesnt want it and that I feel its too big for our living room) is the issue with how SD will look on such a big screen. Im not a gamer so will in the end be watching mostly SD DSTV content... Isnt there some sort of upscaler thingy that can just upscale all digital SD content to near FHD like with the DVD players...?

Dude. Plasma is the best for SD content. It will look sh*t on a LCD or LED. Trust me. I took my multimedia player with to the stores and tested it on all the sets. Plasma won hands down at the end of the day. I have the 42" Sammy plasma. I will get another if I have the money. Your eyes will not see the difference between HD Ready and Full HD.

Thanks for that! Is it then more or less safe to say that most of the people on here would agree that SD content looks fine even close-up on the 42inch plasma? And that there's really not much difference in quality than with a fhd screen when your watching fhd bluerays? And would most people here say that even on a 51inch plasma (while watching 2,5m away) the SD content would not look crappy and irritate the **** out of me? (last question just for interest-sake coz wife is not having the 51inch... damn her flare for decoration! :D)

SD does look crappy close up (<1m) on my 51" plasma but I suppose that's expected.

42" plasma is the best for SD, and definitely the best overall for DSTV including HD PVR. Especially for sport. I also maintain it whips Series 5 LCD at HD and FHD content (I have a Series 4 plasma and Series 5 LCD); but those sold on FHD and resolution will go with the LCD's resolution instead of plasma's picture quality.

Just had two friends over the past few days for the first time (both LCD owners) and blew them away when I demo'd my 42" plasma on SD DSTV and HD DSTV.

The difference between HD and FHD mainly depends on the content, room set up and the person. The viewing distance for a full FHD experience on ±40" is 1.5m; 50" is 2m. Best to go and see for yourself in the store.

I can't imagine you'll be watching more than 10% FHD content. I'd say go with the new 43" Samsung plasma PS43D450. You also get 3D if you're sold on it ;) in the PS43D490 at about R7k.
 
I had an HD Ready 40" LCD for about 4 or 5 years. 2 weeks ago I upgraded to a 42" FHD LED.
The difference is freaking massive IMO - even with SD content. I cannot believe I lasted so long on my previous one.

Post is a bit vague. Massive difference in what way?

Picture quality I can understand. The HD Ready LCD was probably 50Hz entry level. A LG 100Hz FHD LCD is going to have a much superior panel, that even SD will look look better.

Can you elaborate on resolution?

Clearer, sharper and better quality.
Picture quality is definately better overall. It actually took a bit to get used to it after a few years on the old set. Reviews and user comments on forums tend to have a similar opinion which is good.

SD PVR looked terrible at first, but good now after a bit of tweaking in the PVR menu. TV also did a firmware update while I was fiddling with the PVR so not sure if that had an influence. The firmware update made a big difference to media streaming from Mezzmo though.

I am going to upgrade my PVR to an HD soon to take advantage of the better TV.

DSTV HD broadcasts at 1920x1080i and the difference between this displaying natively on a FHD 1920x1080p screen vs 1024x768 is seriously noticable at 2-3m on a 40"+ (unless your vision is shot). On top of that your HDPVR upscales all SD channels via HDMI to 1080i as well, so SD will look good too.

Dont settle for yesterday's (barely more that an old CRT's) resolution, after all high resolution is the essence of the term HD.

So I imagine you'll then suggest an LED? The 6 series? Coz the 51inch plasma is not an option. Budget is not really a factor. Although it would be great if I can spend under R13000. Postman?? what's your reply to this?
 
Those arguments only work on paper, IRL comparison between 42" 720p plasma and 40" 1080p LCD is a different story. At the entry level (Series 4 plasma and Series 5 LCD (I have both)) plasma wins at HD PVR.

There is no doubt that Series 6 LCD is good. However buying it just for resolution is insane in my opinion as the plasma will most probably be better for vast majority of DSTV (SD).

If you have cash to burn go ahead, I would rather save half my money in getting plasma.

BR is 1080p.

1080i is 540p interlaced, so it gas less vertical definition and more motion artifacting than 720p.

1080p>720p>1080i.

Btw Multichoice said they will be reintroducing 720p into some of the HD broadcasts. Thank goodness.
