LCD and Plasma Bargains

Some weekend specials at Audiovision:
Samsung UA40D6600 - R7999 (Normal price is around R13000)
Samsung PS51D550 - R8999 (Normal price was R10999)

Doubt it, probably settings/source/feed etc which always make testing TVs in mass mart stores almost impossible... But if you insist on getting a[nother] cheapie, Hisense is far better than Telefunken.

thinking of getting the D550 51" within the next few days, I know it's very decent, I'd just like to know if there are newer models I should rather be looking at, thanks!

it can be any model but I know Samsung has very good internal video players.

Maybe an LED?

I don't have DSTV so I'd probably use it mostly for:
-downloaded/shared content
-hired bluray/occasional DVD
-will try bf3 on it (rofl) and possibly consoles although I've never owned one.

The only downfall is the reflectiveness but maybe it's not too bad? maybe I can buy some sort of AR coating?

Either or will be great, plasma gives 5" bigger for cheaper than a 46" LED backlit LCD. Reflection depends on you and your room. It's similar to that of a CRT box TV screen. Also remember most Samsung LED-LCDs are quite reflective as well.

Check the prices out at Foto Discount World and Demostock.co.za.
I got a further discount via Dion Wired when they beat the prices by the other two...

Their plasmas are alright, wouldn't buy their LCDs. For HD stuff/gaming/high quality sources they're good enough, but poor at SD/motion in my experience. My 19" Sinotec is also really poor quality, TN panel. Menus are very limiting.

Alright, I purchased the Hisense 40 inch LCD for R4349 (Game beat Hifi Corps price of R4499). I'm about to hook it up to my PS3 in my room and check it out. I was incredibly impressed by the picture quality when I tested various source material on the TV at Hifi Corp.

Also, I learnt today that the new Dion Wired in Canal Walk (Cape Town) are selling 37 inch FHD LG LCD TV's for R3999, and that's its entry price (they opened shop in October 2011). It was really tough for me to choose between the Hisense and the LG, but in the end I went with the Hisense due to the extra 3 inches, the 3 year warranty, and the on-par picture quality.
 
Just tested out two BD's and the PS3 game God of War, and the picture quality is incredible. I haven't tried SD material yet - I plan to do that once I connect my PC to the TV.

Thanks! If you were looking for a TV and had around 8k, which one would you go for?

I see Foto Discount World is down again, I know they had them for a couple hundred less than Demostock, I wonder if I can contact them to make a purchase, anyone know if Foto Discount World is in JHB?

- Kollenade shopping centre
- Irene Village Mall
- The Mall at Reds (Centurion)

Samsung PS51D550 FHD 3D plasma at R8.2k from FDW, no question that it's the best value TV on the market. Extremely well rated too. And it's a plasma.

Thanks to everyone on this forum this is the deal I got about a week ago. I took the Foto Discount World price to Game and got about R360 off - so I paid about R7740 for a full HD plasma television. From some angles you can see the lights reflected on the television but you ignore them after a while. The colours are astounding though and just perfect for my dimly lit living area. I had a problem with a mirror that directly faced the TV, I blocked it off and now it's perfect. I can't tell you how amazing a 51 inch television is. I've hooked it up to my PC via a very long HDMI so I'm playing Skyrim on it as well - insanely beautiful. Thanks again to everyone on this thread for your assistance.
 
How exactly did you do that ? Did you get a quote from FDW on paper and presented that to the sales guy at game ?

Game usually just calls the store that is said to be cheaper to check for stock. If stock, you get 10% off the difference in prices.

I'm sure word of mouth would suffice? Otherwise just print out their site or show them on your phone etc.
