What do you guys make of the Samsung PS43D490 43'' 3D Plasma TV?.. I see its only HD ready and not full hd.

Its R5999 at game, is it worth it?

IMHO wasting R5999.00 on a HD ready TV if a few rand more can give you the real Mcoy in full HD is just not worth it. But then again that's me. Full HD DVD's and other content on BluRay is just not worth missing out on to save a few bucks.

Excellent bang for buck for an all round SD, HD and 3D experience, but don't get it if you sit closer than 2m, or if you have a bright room. Also I've read its 3D performance is average. A forumite recently said 2D SD content upscaled to 3D looked better on the HD Ready Samsung 51" than Full HD LG 47" Cinema. Of course HD content would need to be tested, and 3D content. And importantly, from your home viewing distance, and under similar lighting conditions to your room if possible (plasma suits dimmer rooms/viewing times/etc).

If you haven't already, perhaps weigh up the 3D option, as there are other LCD and plasma options that will provide better value (mainly plasma) if you don't rely on having 3D.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Would like to hear your opinions on what i should get.

First off, this tv isnt going to be the main tv in the house, just a bedroom tv. It isnt a well lit room tbh and the blinds are always closed so there wont be any glare on a plasma. The tv will have a ps3 and an xbox 360 connected to it and it'll be used mostly for watching movies (ps3 as a media centre). At first i thought of 3d as nothing more than a novelty but now with this 2d to 3d converstion i've started wondering if it's perhaps for investing in 3d. Having a ps3 and an xbox has also made me think about 3d. Any thoughts about the 2d to 3d conversion as well as gaming in 3d?

So these are the tvs ive come accross: Samsung PS43D490 43'' 3D Plasma TV; Sony BRAVIA KDL-32CX520; Samsung UA32D5000; Samsung 32D4003; LG 32LV3400.

If i dont go with 3d then im quite happy with a 32" LED. Oh and lastly, i really dont want to go over R6000.

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.. thanks

I wouldn't get 32", too small.

HD Ready is fine for 2 - 3m from a ±40".

Thanks for the input.. But i must ask, on a R6k budget, for a 40odd" tv, is the Samsung PS43D490 the best deal or would you recommend something else?..

You won't find anything with 3D for cheaper.

It suits your room and viewing distance and as such that it'll provide superior picture quality than entry level LCDs (e.g. Series 4 plasma vs Series 5 LCD, vs EX520 - I've personally tested these).

If you decide you don't need 3D, you could look at 40" entry FHD LCD LA40D550/UA40D5000, if you decide you need FHD. You could also look at the PS51D450 51" HD Ready plasma.

Another one biting the FullHD fishing worm!

I recently did a media setup for a buddy who bought the 51D450, he had doubts but those all disappeared when I played a full HD version of Avatar for him. JUst skip to the part where they shoot down the tree, his heart melted.

Go watch a movie on the display to make your decision. Plasma is the way to go.

So i ended up getting the PS43D490 from game. They gave it to me for R4999 incl 4 pairs of 3D glasses (3 pairs of Samsung SSG-3300GR 3D Rechargeable Active Glasses and 1 pair of the SSG-3050GB/XC Active 3D Glasses) and a R50 gift voucher (i still have no idea why tbh).

Picture quality seems great so far, as does the 3D. Only problem ive encountered was that i downloaded an imax 3D half-sbs movie which the USB doesnt seem to support. It's an mkv but the tv seems to be playing other mkv's just fine. The file is also AC3 rather than DTS. Maybe i need to convert it to another format?

Either way, thanks for the thoughts, im very pleased with the deal i got..
