So i ended up getting the PS43D490 from game. They gave it to me for R4999 incl 4 pairs of 3D glasses (3 pairs of Samsung SSG-3300GR 3D Rechargeable Active Glasses and 1 pair of the SSG-3050GB/XC Active 3D Glasses) and a R50 gift voucher (i still have no idea why tbh).

Picture quality seems great so far, as does the 3D. Only problem ive encountered was that i downloaded an imax 3D half-sbs movie which the USB doesnt seem to support. It's an mkv but the tv seems to be playing other mkv's just fine. The file is also AC3 rather than DTS. Maybe i need to convert it to another format?

wow, they were on promo last week for R5999 with the 4 sets which i already thought was a deal

I got it from greenstone but they never had stock so they allowed me to pick it up from dionwired..

When i went to greenstone the sales rep told me it was R4999 but when they rang it up it showed R5999, so they just signed it off as a pricebeat. Then it was supposed to come with 4 pairs of those cheap glasses but theyve made a mistake on their system whereby the 3050 models and the 3100 models have the same barcode. So when i was at dionwired, they never had the 3100 (which is what my slip said i had purchased) so they ended up giving me 3 pairs of the 3300 (rechargable glasses), one pair of the 3050 and a R50 voucher.

Probably more likely just settings, LGs dont have issues with brightness.

In my opinion, comes down to how much 3D do you (& others) expect to do. If the answer is lots (viewing/gaming) then LG's passive 3D is a better bet with cheaper glasses and no long term flicker strain.

If 3D is just another occasional feature, then I'd go with the Samsung (I did). In my experience it has a better 2D picture and includes networking/smartTV features.

A final option in the same price range is the Samsung PS51D550 plasma if you have a dimly lit environment and want a bigger 51" screen. Can be got for just over R8K.
 
Not sure how it was adjusted at Makro Silverlakes the LG and Samsung was Right next to each other.

Friend opted for the Sammy, very happy with it.
Don't expect to do a lot of 3d, mostly DSTV, DVD, Movies etc. and some Gaming.

Myself i am looking at these two, like the sony, but the 60Hz Panel might not do so well with gaming etc.

Modern 60Hz TVs are absolutely perfect for gaming, no worries there.

The question I have though, is why test at Makro? :/ Convenience? Does your/friend's room have extremely high brightness (and perhaps close viewing distances)? Think about it.

By the way, entry HD Ready/720p plasma suits what you're needing better than anything else.

I use a samsung 46" led for gaming and it works amazingly, looks like a 23" monitor and i sit 1m away from it :D.

Bloody epic i tell you, just set it to pc mode in source options and you are good to go. Check that price though i saw game had a similar model going 4999 the other day.

Do not take hd ready plasma for gaming unless you want to sit very far away.

Convenience, unless i can take all the TV's to my room lol

Low Brightness / Dark Room

Keeping the Plasma's in mind as well, but how are they with gaming ?

my requirements the same more or less.

Are you gaming on PC or console? I suspect console.

Perfect viewing distance to not need FHD.

Get the PS51D450 51" HD Ready (720p) plasma at R6-6.5k. Or PS51D490 3D at around R7-7.5k. Or PS51D550 3D FHD at around R8-9k.

Given your conditions and intended usage, plasma is a no brainer. It will blow LCD out the water under dim conditions at any task. But most people will never say this, because they test TVs at mass mart stores instead of pro AV shops where they can replicate home viewing conditions. Since LED-backlit LCD is the brightest, and along with the marketing gimmick, people froth at the mouth because under those incorrect bright conditions, it looks best. Huge fallacy.

Further, your viewing distance means it's unlikely you'll benefit from FHD (1080p).

Also 99% of console games are 720p.

/facepalm

Don't buy 1024x768 HD Ready plasma and expect to sit close and for it to look like a PC screen.

If you want to sit 1m from such massive screens, that's your prerogative :D, then of course go FHD. The resolution/distance charts confirm this.

Wouldn't say so these days, take a check through the recent PS3 titles & new ones being released. I'd say a good 30-40% are 1080p capable (some with 3D, a few with Move capability).

Pretty decent lighting in the room (some natural light gets in during the day too)

I stay in an apartment 3-4m viewing distance definately not more than 5m not less than 3m

For that viewing distance, 42" is too small IMO.

You would need to look at bigger LCDs than the one you posted.

Samsung LA46D550 46" is around R7,999.

If you use the TV in the late afternoon/evening, this should counter any day time sun that may fall on the screen. It would depend on your room's lighting, whether they fall in path of the TV, etc.

If so, best option is Samsung PS51D550 51" FHD plasma at R8.2 - R8.5k.
 
It was actually a 40" Samsung UA405003 so not so great :-(
