I've been using the laptop for a while now, and while I still haven't played many demanding games, it runs everything I throw at it fairly well. The built in speakers are surprisingly decent as well, but won't replace dedicated speakers, obviously.

The hard drive can be sluggish though, especially noticeable copying files to and from a USB 3 external. On my desktop with faster drives it would copy on average at double the speed as this laptop.

I will check back in when I get my SSD but that will probably only be in a few months.

@hsark, right now my battery life is around 3.5 - 4 hours non-gaming, which isn't great, but I'm rarely far from a power source so it's been fine for me so far. An SSD in theory should help with the battery life

it cost me just under R12 700, I was really lucky price wise as I got 2 discounts(bought It from lenovo) it was probably a mistake from lenovo as Ive never seen it at that price again, they were also quite eager to give me a refund.

fyi I live in japan, if you do want to order it you can go through the states and use a 3rd party shipping. honestly though SA price is really competitive globally

@ravage Ive seen some reviewers getting 3.5-4.5 after turn off some background apps, but yeah its a gaming laptop, its battery life is quite solid in comparison to other gaming laptops outside the imac pro.

Im also enjoying the JBL speakers are really touch notch with sub.

Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy a new laptop within the next couple of weeks for work. This Lenovo Y5070 matches my required specs perfectly, but no-one in South Africa seems to have stock of them at the moment -- most outlets say they have stock arriving around the end of October.

Those who pre-ordered this model last time, or anyone who's pre-ordered a laptop form a South African online store, how accurate are the dates most companies quote, and should I expect the laptop to arrive when quoted or should I expect to encounter significant delays? Also, any idea whether the post office strikes could affect this at all?

Any companies in specific that are particularly good or particularly bad with regards to pre-orders?

If budget allows buy it ;) Apply voucher :) Fantastic Price. Wootware still have it listed at the old price, takealot did match the price temporarily. Hope you do get it before Christmas if u do place your order.

They only have 1 available at their warehouse, prices might change afterwards. You better hurry cos takealot sell it for R300 more :)

Hi guys!

Thanks for all the helpful info, I have been eyeing this laptop for a while now - looks like the best value for this price range. Any comments on the crappy reviews of the yellows on the display looking dark and mustard-like? I will be doing more photo editing than gaming. Is the display really as bad as they say?
 
Just ordered one of these puppies after both my desktop and laptop died. Will also let everyone know how it turns out. If I survive the missus' wrath.

I was really looking at it as a contender but I will also be doing photo editing on it, but the reviews on the screen put me off. As well as this video: [video=youtube;T95se-KSX_Y]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T95se-KSX_Y[/video]

Skip to 9 minutes for before and after pics of the original screen and the replacement screen... Perhaps someone who has this laptop will be able to answer you better though...
 
I have had this for a few weeks so I thought I would write a quick review.

The first thing to note about the laptop is thst the core components are very good for the price. There is nothing in the price range that comes close to the i7 and Maxwell 860m combination.

Unfortunately other than that the system is a bit of a let down. Designwise the system looks good but the aluminium is prone to movement and flexes a bit much under pressure. The plastic speaker trim is also a bit suspect. I find the keyboard also indents a bit under pressure.

The screen is as bad as the reviews say it is. It is dim and colours are murky.

The trackpad is one of those where the buttons are part of the pad itself - if, like me, you rest your finger on the left button while you use the pad you are going to go nuts. I often click on a button only for the cursor to jump a few millimetres. It is incredibly jittery. You really need a mouse while using the lap top.

The wireless network adapter also doesn't get as good reception as the other devices in my home.

The 5400rpm HDD is also painfully slow.

On the more posotive side of things battery life is good and I like the rectangular charger plug.

Except for the tendancy of the keyboard to flex when pushed it is nicely responsive and the backlighting is excellent.

Coming from a Samsung notebook the integrated software is great. The brightness and volume controls are available immediately so you don't have to wait until the driver software loads.

Sound is full but I find the volume in VLC for some reason is very soft.

From a performance perspective the laptop is definitely the best bang you can get for your money. Unfortunately since buying the laptop I can't shake the feeling that I should have saved for a little longer and bought one of the Asus ROG machines.

Thanks for the awesome review mate! It really does give a good perspective. How's the games running on the machine? And the noise and heat associated under heavy load?

You should also look into the MSI models with the same specs that go on special for almost the same price every now and then.

No problem. Thought I would give a more detailed writeup since I haven't seen a decent local one.

To answer your questions about heat and noise, the keyboard does get warm to the touch and you can definitely hear the two fans under heavy load. Having said that the air that gets blown out isn't as uncomfortably hot as some laptops I have played with.

The most technically challenging game I have played is The Witcher 2. I play with all settings cranked up and it is smooth except for when the hard drive starts thrashing. They should have at least gone with a 7200 rpm drive.

I have run the latest 3D Mark at the default (Free.) settings. Everything is smooth except for Fire Strike which drops to about 20 fps in spots.

I would recommend holding out for those specials you mentioned.

I had a chance to play around with the new GE62 and GE72 models last night at a launch event and the build quality impressed me a lot. They've slimmed down the profile and added dual fan cooling. In the midrange notebook segment (GTX965m and GTX970m) I think they're going to be the ones to beat.
