LG G3

For me the choice is simple. I'll get the G3 if the reviews show that the SD 801 is efficient.

I've handled two S5's at the office but I cannot get myself to get excited about it. The screen is nice enough, but that chrome edge and huge home button turns me off. I own a S3 and I guess I'm just sick of that same look. I've always loved Samsung for pawning Apple (uh-oh), but I think it's time for the underdog to become a force to reckon with so that Samsung (and all the other manufacturers) can be forced to innovate again.

IMHO, the best thing the S5 probably has going for it, is that custom ROM support will be fantastic because of the amount of people getting the device. Don't know the LG ROM scene at all. But I believe if this phone takes off, it'll be good.

Oh what bollocks. Its like when they said that HD audio was a waste because the human ear cant hear above blah blah blah.

Lol, I actually agree with that. "HD" audio is a gimmick. Don't get me wrong, 24bit/192Khz is physically different to 16bit/48Khz but not to the human ear.

Give me a phone with a mini vinyls slot and I'll pay R30,000 for it! Even if it's 2 tracks per vinyl. :D

Why do you want a phone made of titanium? Samsung has ADH. You drop it, the screen breaks, you get a new one ;)

Peeling? wtf, you say you aren't tough on phones, but maybe you are sweating acid or something. First person ever I hear of that happening.

Buy now you should also know that the S5 camera have been rated the best out there at the moment. 2gb ram, who cares, it works butterly smooth. I have the Gear 2 as well, and its just awesome.

You say nothing new technically, but what 'new' thing has the G3 got? I don't buy the screen awesomeness just yet, its a wait and see for me. Also how it will affect battery life.
Its not that I want a phone made out of titanium or that I think the S5 will break if it falls 10cm. Its the same as wanting to have a nice watch on your wrist vs some cheap plastic thing, a car that has a dashboard made out of soft touch plastics vs Tupperware.

This isn't mine but this kind of peeling is very common on Samsungs.

Just google for Samsung phone paint coming off / peeling and you will see loads. A device that feels like a cheap mixed with paint coming off is enough to keep me away for a while.

For me the G3 looks super sexy in black, early reports suggest it feels great too. The tech wows for me would of course be first and foremost the screen which is not just qHD which is a first, but the fact that they were able to fit something so big into a device pretty much the same size as the rivals which now look a bit silly to be honest. Laser auto focus + optical image stabilization are another two very "wow" features which will actually be used a lot compared to fingerprint scanners and heart rate monitors no one will ever use.

We'll have to see how battery life fairs. LG have said the QHD panel uses no more power than an equivalent 1080P screen. They'll look pretty bad if that is not the case. I'm not at all worried about performance. As I have said before I already have that screen in my tablet with the same but lower clocked processor at it is super quick, games and all.

Ok. I've listened to some reviewers now, and they all have similar stories. I'll retract my comments about the screen until I see it for myself.

Also, the freakin laser on the camera is apparently fantastic and kicks Samsung's ass :D

Happy now?

The only issue is that it's pushing double the pixels for the same processing power of any other phone using the same chipset. I don't see how that won't impact the performance, thermals and battery life negatively. Marques Brownlee picked up on a quirk where it dimmed the backlight to 90% or lower if the heat ramped up.

Perhaps, but the S600 chipset didn't do too badly scaling from the HTC One to the Nexus 7.

The 805 is available to OEM's, but it's unfortunate to see that the G3 didn't make use of it. The 805 also supports 4K HEVC decoding natively, and a better graphics processor, which would have made sense for the QHD display.

Perhaps. 805 is still in development phase itself. I don't think that it would see the light of day outside of a tablet or phablet application. It's built on the same 28nm process as 801, doesn't include an integrated modem (which 801 does) and may throttle even more harshly than 801 currently does.

This quote from Anandtech makes sense:

Qualcomm tells us that some of its customers will choose to stay on Snapdragon 801 until the 810 arrives next year, while some will choose to release products based on 805 in the interim. Based on our results here, if an OEM is looking to specifically target the gaming market I can see Snapdragon 805 making a lot of sense. For most of those OEMs that just launched Snapdragon 801 based designs however, I don't know that there's a huge reason to release a refresh in the interim.

ok. so watched your little video here, and have a couple of comments.

1. So, she was saying that it will make to difference to you, unless you watch a lot of pictures and movies on your device. ummm, ok, do you think that applies to ALL movies? How do you think SD content will look on this display as opposed to the S5 display.

2. Who the fsck watches full HD or QHD content on a freakin phone?

3. What is it with you and this chick? You seem the have a real hard on for her? I mean, if she had a dick, you would suck it for sure.

LG says August or September. Don't know if I can wait that long. It appears the HTC one m8 is now available so now what :/

If the phone camera is not important to you, then the HTC is your m8 without the h8.

If you can put up with a gargantuan lower front bezel and average camera, then the One M8 is a decent phone.

I'll have a look at one in person before purchasing although I haven't read too many complaints regarding the bezel.

For R500 per month it better be freaking amazing not decent!

You don't have to read complaints. Just look at the thing:

That bezel would seriously bother me.

If you aren't going to get the G3,then I would rather get the S5 than the M8. Seriously.

Honestly, though. What can a phone to do make it 'freaking amazing' for you?

I can't think of anything. I also get quite excited by the 'oooh, new tech!' effect, but if I look at what I actually use the phone for 95% of the time it's pretty mundane. Messaging, browsing, making some calls. That's pretty much it. Oh, and some Quiz Up.

No new phone will do it substantially better than the one I have now. And none will do it in a way that makes it 'freaking amazing'. Maybe we've just got unreasonable expectations?
