Linux desktop growing - Shuttleworth

I read:
"Linux software is so crap by comparison to MS that we are relying on the entire computing perception to change before Linux is adopted. And I hope to god MS write an online office suite, cause so far the open source muppets have missed the mark."

:D

ROFL!

why...you...

"The next version of windows will be better?" :o

Microsoft'll try to undo its mistakes with Vista and deliver something that's better (according to them). But there are a few factors working against them :

- M$ is going to get serious collateral damage because of Vista, and the 18-month gap before a new winders version is released.

- In the meantime there's XP - but XP is being targeted increasingly by malware and adware - and this will also be a major factor in the deciding factor whether to migrate over to linux or not. They simply does not have anything better to offer at this point in time.

- Asus started a trend with their Eee laptop, and this is going to accelerate. Ppl want a cheap laptop with long battery life - not something with a short battery life, which takes ages to boot up, and require a top-of-the-range laptop to operate properly.

Ag. It won't be as bad for Microsoft as you think. Remember that most people aren't in the IT sector and couldn't care what they use on their desktop/laptops. Most people will end up running Vista by default because it will ship with their computer.

Even in our IT department if you mention Linux everyone cause pale d in the face because it is "super hard to use" and only for "hardcore IT people". If IT people can react like that it will be decades before the average user even hears about Linux let alone starts running it on their systems.

For the moment I think Linux will continue to dominate in embedded systems like routers and TVs etc. Microsoft will own the desktop for many years to come...

That said I run Ubuntu 8.04 on my laptop and I like it more than Vista. It is more stable and faster. There are still one of two wrinkles that they need to iron out before average joe will be able to set it up correctly but they are making admirable progress.

I think he means "next version of windows will be better [than Vista]"

But then again, thats not a hard thing to do...

Vista was thusfar M$'s biggest effort. Meaning they will have to work harder next time not to reproduce another mistake.

+1 with you on that one. Linux did something really good by going for the EEE.

That's exactly what that guy from Microsoft was saying about Linux.

Evidently "that guy from Microsoft" never tried out Vista. Everyone who's used Vista for 2 seconds or more and Linux for around 1 second will know that Linux is ahead of the "who's going to eventually win the OS-war".

Arm your kids with Linux Asus EEE pcs and watch MS go up in smoke in under 10 years:D.
