Hi all,

Hope this is the right place, but I am looking to attend some Linux/Unix training to supplement my current skill set, which is mostly an MS/Cisco cocktail, with my experience coming from enterprise-class server and network management. I've mucked around with some Linux distributions over the last couple of years, but by no means used it comrehensively.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking the more generic the better, or would it be better to look at soemthing more product-specific, like for example Solaris?

What are you going to use it for?

The reason I ask this is because you need to keep your skills honed, and if you are going to study (aka. spend cash) then it stands to reason that it should be something you are going to use and need in the future.

Linux/Unix is a very involved OS, don't think you are going to do a course and 2 years down the line remember what is what, you have to stay in practice on a regular basis.

If you have answered that then it will become quite clear what you need to focus on with regards to your studies.

If you are only going to muck about for the heck of it, then pick a distro and get acquainted with it's WIKI and forums.

Thanks MyWorld, I'll check it out.

I am looking at moving into hosted, ISP-type environments. I have had a number of opportunities that I had to turn down because of my lack of unix experience/expertise, and I want to start getting more involved, at least just at a foundational level. I don't expect to become (even a little) proficient by just attending a course and reading some manuals, but I need to start somewhere and go from there.

In short, I am looking more for back-end admin type skills.

I did my RHCE via Obsidian some time back.

I wonder if they still offer the course/exams?
