LION'S HEAD HIKE:
This will happen again this month on the night of the full moon which is
tomorrow Wed 11th March 2009. Since the sunset is around 19:10, we (SAAO team) would like to depart from the Lion's Head parking at 17:45. SAAO guys will take telescopes up there also which anyone can look through - just find them and ask!

It's a good reason to have a great picnic on top of the mountain and watch the sunset, and the full moon rise thereafter! Enjoy! Take a torch - and a jacket!

I'll be going with a friend in VWS uniform and maybe a few other VWS members, if anyone else is keen, just come! :)

mercurial and PostmanPot, you 2 especially are more than welcome to come, bring those FANCY cameras of yours ;)

For those who haven't gone ... DO IT!

When I lived in CT as a poor student who couldn't afford anything, I used to climb Lion's head daily. Takes about 45mins up - 25 down.

Just be warned - if it's a full moon, there are going to be hundreds of tourists/people climbing it at night! Not a word of lie. However, when you're at the top waiting for the moon to "rise", it's one of the coolest things ever!

I would not suggest you take anything bigger than a small back pack with you. Also, if you haven't climbed the chain route before - rather don't do so at night. They can be VERY slippery from everyone's sweat and I've seen more than one ambulance crew go up there in my time.

Gdiza, we took some awesome time lapse pics up there & I'll try get them localized for you!

Have fun guys! I'm rather jealous...

@ mercurial: dude you're missing out big time!

Unfit at the moment but will definitely join in the future. Maybe I'll have a better lens then, too. ;)

So people actually walk up to and say "OMG I also want to hike up a mountain in a cool uniform like that. Where do I sign up?"

@ Voicy

My friend 'suggested' that we go up in full gear, but I down right said no.
I'm just going with my uniform and helmet and gloves and a first aid kit.

That's it.
Afterwards, I'll go for a beer somewhere to re-hydrate ;)
