I'm simply referring to one section of the climb which makes use of chains on a shortcut. It's adventurous, but can be dangerous. There is an easier route that you can walk to get around it. Highly recommended!

I've climbed table mountain too - it was pretty cool when you get to the top, but the Lion's head climb is just so much nicer as an over all experience.

Climbing lionshead was just about the only thing I could afford when my poor ass studied in CT.
 
Lion's head full moon hike! [9th April 2009]

Hi all,

Just so that you have WARNING and can plan accordingly, Thursday, the 9th April 2009 is the next full moon hike.

I had a great time last night and pictures are available on my Flickr, but my camera can't take really awesome sunset/moon, city pictures :(

So yeah, anyways, be at Lions Head parking area at about 5:30pm'ish for a prompt 5:45pm walk up.

mercurial and PostmanPot are welcome to bring their fancy cameras up and take beautiful photos.

Oh, regarding last night - herewith feedback from the people at SA Astronomical Observatory which I am sure you would like to read:

Every now and then one should take a step back and reflect on why it is one does what one does.

Tonight on Lion's Head such an opportunity was afforded to us with a perfectly clear still warm night with a full moon, Saturn, Orion and Southern Cross hanging over the majestically polluting city lights of Cape Town. On such a marvellously reflective venue we had taken up one 6 inch Dobsonian telescope and an Earthball. By our estimate considering time spent and rate of viewing, there were over 250 views through the telescope (fewer separate individuals since some came by twice or thrice
for different objects). Of the numerous WOWs and OHMYGODs and NOWAYs that we heard there was one that stuck out the most. There was a twentysomething girl who was so completely blown away by Saturn's rings that she actually broke into tears! She could not believe what she was seeing to the point that she grabbed both my hands in hers, looked me in the eyes with tears in hers and said something along the lines of "but you don't understand - this is so amazing - I've never seen anything like this before"

If ever you doubt that astronomy can change people's lives, please come speak to me and to many others who see these things daily! If ever you doubt the impact of the work you do in promoting astronomy, we definitely need to chat.
If ever you feel overwhelmed with all the beaurocracy and routine of daily life, take some time to go outside and look at the skies - and perhaps take someone with you - to find your peace.

Astronomy is more than just another field of science - it is a source of inspiration and wonder - a tool to shape not just our perspective of the universe but also our actions in interacting with it - and it is the one thing that ties all of us on this AstroNet list/discussion group together!

Oh, please bring a headlamp for when you walk down, they go for about R150 at Cape Union Mart - last night saw me and my other friend having to walk down with groups of tourists because they didn't have lights on them.

Decided on the spur of the moment that I'd go. We didn't make it up all the way. Pity that the cops blocked the road entrance at the bottom, which made it a looong walk to do at 20:00 in the dark. Also, only one of us has a torch. Next time we'll go earlier to get parking, and come better equipped. Going to check through pics to see if I got anything good, but wow, tripod will help next time! :D

When I lived in CT as a poor student who couldn't afford anything, I used to climb Lion's head daily. Takes about 45mins up - 25 down.

Just be warned - if it's a full moon, there are going to be hundreds of tourists/people climbing it at night! Not a word of lie. However, when you're at the top waiting for the moon to "rise", it's one of the coolest things ever!

I would not suggest you take anything bigger than a small back pack with you. Also, if you haven't climbed the chain route before - rather don't do so at night. They can be VERY slippery from everyone's sweat and I've seen more than one ambulance crew go up there in my time.

Gdiza, we took some awesome time lapse pics up there & I'll try get them localized for you!

Very keen to give this a go - any pointers on where to get semi-decent headlamps for very cheap? Bit of a tight budget at the moment :-/.
