List of congested exchanges?

So this is still a problem, and one the technicians cannot solve. Every call I log gets closed, saying that they can't do anything. It's a management decision to oversubscribe the exchanges.

You can add Welgemoed, Bellville to that list. Last few weeks anytime after 6pm the line would go to hell with ridiculously high pings and very low down speeds. Random disconnects as well. This week though, it's been looking horrible during work hours as well :( Dunno what to do anymore, browsing the internet is a pain, playing games online is impossible...

Some speedtests I've taken:

4Meg line, uncapped with mweb.

Cancel your ADSL and go wireless - I have been forced to do that - my 4Mbps ADSL was crawling !

Cell C is way faster than what my ADSL was.

I wish that was an option, I need the low latency and high data usage of DSL otherwise I would have shown Telkom the finger years ago.

However, I'm betting LTE will arrive LONG before Telkom fixes this problem. I just hope data pricing isn't ridiculous.

In farrarmere they don't have enough connection points so everyone goes without a line for a few days at a time. Complain and they sort you out but then someone else must lose their adsl and phone for a while... Nevermind the horrible speeds that the line gets when it is connected.

Placed an order for a new line today, I really can't wait forever for them to sort out their issues...

Indeed, it kinda sucks that one has to go as far as to order a new line and cancel the old one in a situation like this, to get it resolved, but looking back I am glad I did it.

Napier, connecting via the Napier exchange, which is connected via backhaul running from Bredasdorp, which is so congested that the whole of Napier, Bredasdorp, Arniston, Agulhas etc are left with 128kbps worth of total bandwidth average during the day on weekdays, on good days.

I can't stream a 9kb/s inet radio stream (international). I can barely get the mybroadband site to load (local). I need to study using online resources that are hosted internationally that I cannot access, all because of Telkom.

Things were fine here until about 3 months ago; there are other things I need to be able to do online that I cannot. I used to work part-time doing online tech support that I now cannot, because my connection is not reliable enough to maintain chats with customers. If this forum allowed swearing, this message would have been more colourful than this piece of crap rainbow nation; it's taking every bit of my patience to not pull my hair out and become bald at this worthless situation Telkom is forcing its customers into, all while it's trying to trial even faster services on a backbone that cannot support the existing services.

At this rate, I would like to see a well written up petition asking that people only pay for services that they have been provided with. Telkom staff can remotely check the speed at which a connection is able to operate; how I don't know, but I do know that when I was recently talking to Telkom's DSL tech support, they were able to run remote speed tests of some nature to see what amount of bandwidth they were able to get to my router using a local connection, and the numbers they were getting were reflected in the tests I did to local servers on speedtest.net, so Telkom clearly have the necessary hardware, software and know-how to monitor what clients' connections are capable of at any one point in time. Because of this capability, they should be wholly able to monitor their infrastructure's key points on the network at the very least and determine that clients connected to given exchanges have, during period x, only been able to achieve up to service level y, and only bill them appropriately.

In 2006, we went without internet for 25 days due to issues with Telkom's infrastructure. I'm not talking about services merely being slow, I'm talking about a complete service outage. At the time we were still using TelkomInternet for our ADSL account, and after a long and arduous battle with their billing department over the phone, I was able to get them to reimburse us for the percentage of time that we were without the utility of our ADSL connection and for the amount of bandwidth we were unable to use on our 3gb account, taking into account that I made a point of using up all bandwidth on the account at the end of every single month.

I don't like that Telkom is so happy to take hundreds of rands of our money to pay for services that we aren't receiving. I don't like that should I drop back down to 384kbps from 4mbps, that I will not be able to make use of 4mbps service levels when they are finally available, which is generally only between 1am and around 6am.

All of my rage.

Just a quick heads-up for those willing to pay more or desperate enough. After a long battle with Telkom due to a congested dslam I gave up and went the WISP route (www.wirelessonline.co.za). A week now of pure internet bliss - unshaped, uncontended internet with 4Mb/s upload and download speeds.

Not all wireless service providers are doing anything more than reselling a DSL connection to you via wireless. In some cases you may even be sharing a connection with someone else without knowing it (such as if you're signed up for a 2mbit service).

At that ridiculous pricing it's wholly possible for them to resell a business-class account to you on a business-class connection. As we all know, business clients with Telkak get priority over consumer clients.

Options (residential customer with congested dslam/exchange)

1) ADSL

- price: decent
- speed: non-existent
- reliability: none

2) Wireless

- price: expensive
- speed: excellent
- reliability: excellent

BTW, I took the Business Extreme option (unshaped, uncontended) -

I'll likely try the Value option some time for a bigger cap -

The point is, it is not an ADSL alternative if your ADSL actually works...

Bothasig response times were back to normal the last two nights, let`s hope they fixed something! - Might have to cancel that second line i ordered! :erm:

I've been imposing on a friend these last couple of weeks, but I did notice that it did seem better last night just after 11 when I tested.

I'll still continue with my new line though, it sucks only being able to get 2mb(with ****ty stats, but it works), so I'm hoping I might get a better connection on the new one.

Hey guys,

Rondebosch, Cape Town. I'm only getting half my normal speed on a 1024 line and most of the time browsing is extremely sluggish. currently on the 3 month uncapped trial promo with Telkom.

Not happy at all :(

The Rondebosch exchange is beyond dead! I've been having latency problems since April/may this year. I'm talking 1200ms LOCAL pings sometimes.
I think the exchange is just too old and oversubscribed. I'm thinking of bombing it so they forced to build us a new one!

It could just be that the uncapped 1024 runs at half speed during the day... Telkom impose restrictions based on the time. Is that after hours speed?

It is all hours speed. I'm synced at 1024 but from torrents, speedtest and a few other measures it looks like I have a 300kbit line. I am so unimpressed because the whole reason I'm opting for the higher speed is purely for gaming...

Do you think switching to Mweb will make any difference?
