LIVE | Apartheid flag judgment

So possessing the flag is not an offense then, just displaying it is?

There is a problem with displaying it with ill intent or using/displaying it to cause harm.

Gratuitous

done without good reason; uncalled for.

Reasoning would be that if I have good memories or lived under that flag, I would have a reason (a good one) to still display it. The ruling is a farce...

Poor little snowflakes.
Did the flag touch you on your studio?
Aww lets molly coddle you.
It’s laughable

It's a flag mate..... my middle finger is more offensive...

BTW... the current flag is technically expired, it was only created to be temporary

Both flags mean nothing to me, people should fly any flag they believe in, however I can at least understand why the flag is controversial. I can grasp why it is banned from public, I cannot grasp why people are butt hurt over it.

I think it has to do with the Afrikaans culture being destroyed or people believing it's being destroyed bit by bit.

There is a sense that the Afrikaans people and their heritage/history are slowly being destroyed by the ANC/Government. Instead of it being an all inclusive country, the minorities are being pushed to non-existence. The flag is but just one more nail in the coffin following a long list of nails through the last 25 years.

+1000 You've covered the sentiment.

I guess you are right, I understand that the flag has a lot of history with many people and its good nature as simply being part of someones upbringing has been corrupted by other groups using it to push an agenda. I think the court could at very least understand that wasn't all bad - for the majority of people living in SA at the time it was the identity and symbol of their home.

I personally am not attached to either flag, but remember the old flag on my school work and textbooks growing up and there was nothing malicious about it back in the day. I think the biggest issue is that using the flag is often seen as opposition to the new SA, whem it hasn't always been the case with a couple of news stories we have had in the past

It's got nothing to do with the flag itself, even the banning is not actually about the flag itself... it part of a cultural war against "whitenness" otherwise known as low intensity ethnic cleansing. Same thing with the statues and place names... it's soft war.

I myself have no real link to the flag. Other than standing there at attention every morning at mass when the flag was hoisted and singing "Die Stem". I can however relate to people who died for that flag, people who lost children fighting at the border against the Red Communist wave flooding the World. I have empathy for the people who have lost their husbands, friends, relatives and brothers.

I have a sense of utmost respect for the people who died protecting this country under that flag and the pride they showed while doing it. Even more so if you realize those who did it had no choice in the matter.

That is what I think about when I see that Glorious flag! A flag that so many people died for to protect. Just waving it away and saying it's an "Apartheid flag" is wrong in so many ways. In essence, this ruling is actually further dividing the nation in what the judge thought would be best to do in the interest of social cohesion. It's doing the exact opposite.

Problem is they are adding fuel to the fire within.

For me it has nothing to do with any of that stuff. I simply view it as the state infringing on people's freedom of expression. I would have exactly the same problem with the judgement if it was a Nazi flag or a Communist flag.

Same thing with the union jack and the current blood soaked flag for that matter.

no it was not a symbol, its a flag, there are symbolic representations on the flag. it is also symbolic of breaking free from oppressors of south african people at the time, primarily afrikaans people. even then they still placed the union jack on the flag anyway to accommodate others who were related.

there are many other things related to "those that oppressed others" too, will they also be banned because of what others think it symbolises. as i referenced in the first line of that post, which you ignore

and tbh i dont care for the anc or their flag or logos, its their things, they can wave it as much as they want.

again, if you read the first line of what i typed, you will see i mentioned more than just a flag.

there are even more to mention but im too lazy too, while it appears i am wasting my time with you as well since you cannot see past "white".
Not a symbol?

Yet many here speak of its symbolism for their culture ...

Have they now gone and increases the value of this flag just like that?

New flag R150 on gumtree
Old flag R1500 secretly imported on the black market..

I agree with you, I feel that even the nazi flag being banned is extreme, it is better to put measures into place to prevent actions like that from ever happening again, not banning souvenirs.

As far as I can tell waving the flag here is seen in the same light as burning a flag in america. People are going to be emotional about it and we can't control how people react, it is better to help establish an understanding of what the flag ISN'T than feeling sad about it, and the first act is to distance ourselves from those that use the flag with a negative message. If all the racists could have gotten their OWN new flag, the old flag most likely wouldn't have been an issue

My view is that you have to allow people to be as racist as they want to be, else wise you cannot know what the sentiment about these sensitive topics are. The only entity that should be forbidden from being racist is the government because it is a legal monopoly on force. After that it is anything goes.
